Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Hiring Fresh Grads and cheaper labor from Bangalore on L1 to replace 10year veteran

We just hired 2 fresh grads and got an internal transfer from India - All this year.
And they let go of a technical leader who was mentoring them.
This is how Cisco works!

"Well those are h1b or close relatives/friends of the management, they are not that good anyway, so won't be able to leave."

Good? It's all about relationships. The management will refer them to other companies with stellar recommendations. When was the corporate world ever about being good?

Most senior management at most companies have no meaningful metrics and don't know what they're doing. Relationships and folklore ("hey, Google did open office plans! That must be the best way to improve productivity!") define who goes, who stays and what happens in the middle. For a time many companies refused to hire people with "experience" as it "was the old way of thinking." Everything OP complains about Cisco doing today Cisco was doing 20 years ago, and the executives in all hands were very open that they could get 4-5 people in India for the cost of one person in the US.

Debating whether any of this is right or wrong is meaningless as statistically no one here will have both the power and the will to truly improve things. What we can do is try to provide useful information to those just laid off and those yet to be laid off (many of us have already been there) to actively take control of their career and maintain career long vigilance to be prepared for future layoffs. Recognize this includes carrot (many people do find themselves in a better position being forced to change jobs) and stick (just like in college working on a large project or cramming for a major exam you need to burn the midnight oil building your skill set and professional network.)

The fresh grads will leave after 3 years for a salary bump. Welcome to the corporate world.
