@vtw+1nEMBqi1, another sign it's a layoff or limited restructuring, instead of a termination/firing is when they offer you additional severance pay/benefits if you agree to sign a waiver agreeing not to sue the company.
@1ebs+1nEMBqi1, I think that depends on what the termination is for.
If you're fired for cause, i.e. not showing up for work, showing up drunk, stealing from the company, etc., then yes, there is no severance.
If you're put on a performance improvement plan, or PIP, like they used to do in order to mange you out of the company before LR's became so common and quicker to just put you onto the LR list instead of manufacturing the documentation to prove you didn't improve your performance, it was my understanding that you received some sort of package if you were terminated under a PIP. I don't know what the package was called, and if it was called a severance package. And if it included any additional pay/benefits if you signed an agreement not to sue or not. I've known people to leave via the PIP back in the '00's, but I never heard what the details were about the package, only that is was a lot more than the typical 2-weeks pay in lieu of notice.
@vtw+1nEMBqi1, it should have been made clear to you when you were let go/terminated. I hate to use the word "terminated" because it confuses things, but being "fired", or let go with cause, and being "laid off" as a result of restructuring, both end up with a "termination" of employment. Since Cisco, at least in the US, is an "at will" employer, both Cisco and the employee can terminate the employment at any time for any reason, or no reason at all.
If I may ask, how does one know if they got terminated or laid off? Speaking as someone who just got laid off for the first time today and am at a loss. My manager said the reason was restructuring, does that mean my case is a layoff?
If you manager said it was restructuring, it was a layoff. I've been laid off more than a few times due to company buy outs, company failures, and plain old cost-cutting reductions. When you interview, and you are asked about why you left a company that laid you off, try to show it in the light that it was a cost cutting measure that affected many people and not an indicator that you were a low performing employee. Some places do cut from the bottom, but Cisco tends to cut based on wages/cost, not on performance.
Post ID: @OP+1nEMBqi1 ouch! but what was package? In the end thats all matters
I’m not sure what the OP meant; however, typically, you don’t get a severance if you are terminated.

How is that even possible? Serious question: they give you the package to prevent you from suing the company in the future...
Sorry 😞
Sorry to hear. What org?
