It pi---s me off that management favorites can do nothing but hang around the office all day and they still never get affected by layoffs. They're dragging the entire company down because you know they're not going to voluntarily leave a place where they have it made. I'd like to know what it would take to get rid of them (and there are a few in each team, I am willing to bet).

Dahling! Life isn’t fair! Make a co-----l of remorse with a dash of bitterness and sip it slowly.
Moreover, they are not in the office. They are working their way at home while the people who are in the factories are being squeezed by being demand to do a lot more with less resources.
Hang in there. I hope that good things will happen for those who can weather this storm. I also understand that notion of not wishing to go down on sinking ship.
The way I see it, those that get promoted in business is not based on performance it’s based on someone being your buddy. So many I’ve seen get promoted while their track record of results is a train wreck. It’s why the good ones leave.
Bunch of people pretending to work because they don't actually do anything and they know it. There's literally no corporate oversight to see it in any local plant. At some point 3m needs to come in and see what little most of these shmucks actually do and does it justify their salaries. I can instantly tell you no in most cases. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to clean house yet 3m sits on their thumbs still. Be proactive and fix this stupid company. It needs to be the top coming down because the bottom just protects themselves.
Keep your chin up and nose to the grindstone. Eventually the do nothings will expose themselves when they are unable to produce something their manager needs in a hurry, something that was clearly the responsibility of the do nothing to have on hand at the ready. You will smirk as they squirm. Over time they will paint themselves into a corner of unpromotability as you quietly leapfrog them. Hang in there!
