I agree with your comments regarding the hoax construction initiative, but don't think it was under Ray E.'s watch. His horrible predecessor (who was invited to leave 3M not by his choice) was the VP (now President title) during this fiasco.

PSD Construction Initiative… B-u-l-l s*** strategy conjured up by co-National Sales Managers, one who went on to become the US Sub Director. Of these two, one left 3M, the other is still selling his voodoo to upper 3M management who is more than happy to buy it. The initiative was lots of fluff and spending only to get dismantled due to lack of ROI. Millions of $$ wasted with very little return. This person is now a VP (previous Director) of a significant 3M business and may be slated for return to PSD as the new leader. No accountability, no proven track record… just a lot of nepotism and BS.

"Broad exposure" does nothing to solve for MR's room temperature IQ.

He completed his mission to cut headcount just in time to move on to being CEO at a new company. Timing and planning perfection! I recall colleagues at PSD wondering if they were next on the chopping block when he first joined PSD - coast is clear guys and gals!...................for now...............

He was good to execute the downsizing in many division but not for growth. As an atty he focused to follow the playbook of Vale and mitigate liability. A good h.i.t man but certainly without business skills and growth mindset.

This!

Way, way too much shuffling within 3M, couched under the guise of giving purported HiPos “broad exposure” to various 3M businesses. The frequency of shuffling was so great that impact of their judgment, decision-making, and leadership was impossible to discern over such a short timeframe, before the rising star was already off to the next opportunity/assignment. It created an environment ripe for a complete lack of accountability. The list of bad decisions by executive management which were not discovered until long after they moved on was immense. The Aearo acquisition comes to mind.

Also agree, and not just him. It takes time to really learn about a business and the constant moving around of directors, VPs, marketers etc is not an advantage for a company.

Agreed with previous poster. He never stayed long enough to understand how to strategize in the personal safety industry. Looking at his past few years movements, PSD, CMSD, Auto...etc. how is that relevant?

He is a good guy and at the macro level
he has very good leadership qualities like his enthusiasm, energy, and positivity……but….he bounced around way too much. A long series of 18 month stints all over he place. Never stayed in any role long enough to truly learn the nuances of the business and to be effective. This is a fundamental flaw 3M has had for too long - an idea that moving people around this quickly is good.

Another demonstration of lack of succession planning. Senior leadership leaving in droves at much faster rate than developing next successor.
End result- more external hires, learning curve, new cultures.
Business result might take longer to stabilise.

When a military is about to lose the war and have lost their experienced critical leaders, the less experienced “young” survivors are desperately elevated to lead the troops. Remember this when the next PSD Division President is announced. It will either be the premature promotions of someone with some industry knowledge, but not the experience nor capability to lead a Division of this size, or it’ll be someone with no Safety industry experience but has a lot of boxes they check (both the good ones and the not so good ones).

Expect more to follow. Division presidents and other top executives are not happy with the lack of control they have over decisions for their own businesses (factory resources, St. Paul manufacturing resources). In a nightmare scenario 3M will be left with a lot of SVPs and VPs of HR, Communication, Sustainability, etc. and there will be few qualified people remaining to run the businesses. Then they can go beg folks externally.

Tireman is doing a great job driving everyone out.
