Bitter Management?

I was with MDT for six years and left the company last month for a better-paying job (surprise). Even after having the same manager for the last three years, I thought it was pretty standard for my manager to send out an official notice/email but my old coworkers told me there still hasn’t been one.

Along with my less than productive exit interview, is anyone else experiencing “bitter managers” for leaving the company? I frankly do not care but what do managers actually do when they cannot one, do their employees work and two, even send a simple “farewell” email? The MDT culture just seems to portray people leaving for new opportunities as the ultimate betrayal when we should be celebrating.

It must vary a lot by group. I have experienced a very well done going away process as I am moving to a different company. I liked my job and my co-workers and direct management. But, RTO versus work from home was a deal breaker for my family situation. I ended up finding work with a company that embraces work from home and a nice bump in pay for similar work. Those options are out there.

Agree that there is no standard for this and is usually at the discretion of the manager or sometime the functional leader or general manager. My experience was that in times of upheaval, RIFs and other difficulties, I was advised from above not to send out departure notes. It wasn't personal or a reflection of how I valued the employee, but rather a sign that there were just too many people leaving to keep up. That said, I always encouraged my employee to notify whoever they wanted in whatever manner suited them best.

for one there is no "standard" for announcing a departure . you really are at the mercy of your manager, and what their HR or Comms person (if you have a coms person in your OU) says should be done. it does seem now people are more reserved in the level they announce and how broad, i think people are afraid post RIF and VERP to highlight voluntary moves.

I left last month as well and my manager, Director and VP were all very supportive in my next career step. The VP was interested in hearing my reason for leaving so she could understand what they can do for retention of talent. Truly it was because of a higher role for me and the uncertainty of when a promotion would have been available at MDT. Everyone understood. I made it clear I was sad to leave (I enjoyed my direct colleagues). It was the most professional and respectful departure I have had from a company and I would be open to coming back if a role I’m interested in ever opens (and there’s a new CEO).

I have never witnessed such behavior from management during my 30+ years at MDT
