My coworker got RIF a few weeks ago and he ended up working the full day so he can give his manager a status update on his tasks. Do you need to work the full day if you got laid off?

At the very least it is the compassionate thing to do to allow the person losing their job to go home and process.
The manager just told you your job and you were redundant and unnecessary. Pack your private property and politely walk out the door after saying goodbye to your friends. Be the bigger person!
The point of being laid off is that any pending tasks aren't your tasks anymore.

You don't. Once you have a meeting with HR and you manager you hand in you PC and and other company property. Manager knew in advance that person is going to get layedoff. They should have collected all information on employees work in advance.
