Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Does anyone still work in office at 3M Center?

Seems like next to nothing in the way of cars. You can have your choice of parking spots. Are that many people WFH still?

Back in the 80s, there were more people in the lots on a Saturday morning than what you see today. Then again, people would put in a bit extra each week because loyalty was a 2 way street back then. I remember working Saturdays, at least 9 to 1. Not every weekend, but on the cr-ppy rainy days or when it was 20 below windchill.

Only when the 'Subway' returns will we truly be back in the office.

I go in 2-3 days a week because I have equipment that I refuse to store and power inside my home, anymore. The services have definitely improved lately. Salad bar and to-go pizzas are great. Lots of people in the cafeteria on Wednesdays.
Almost like before times.

Also "Dave"? has returned with his bread On Wednesdays outside the 3M store (which is also packed). The refurbished 223 building is like having modern office space to your self.
As an introvert, I love that our space is beautiful, but also empty!

What has this board been hearing about returning to the office? What options do I have if my direct manager is playing games to get me back in. Its as if worrying about my job isn’t enough of a b@ll buster.

Its a ghost town with horrible morale. The majority of the people you see at the center are executives, all circling around rhe EVPs, and a group of bu-t kissers who want to be seen, thinking theymight not get laid off cuz thwyre in the office.

Rather save my 20 min commute than go to work and stare at the same teams meeting

3M Center is becoming a zombie town as someone mentioned.

Watch on YouTube Omega Man 1971 movie with Charlton Heston. HQ may as well be occupied by zombies wishing to finish the unraveling of what is left of 3M society.

Dystopia has taken over where once utopia existed at 3M during the 20th century.

Not sure what's to write but the Kodak style epitaph. Never had to happen. Mcnerney decided the fix for 3M was to make it a replica of GE. Both companies have destroyed themselves and the competitors are loving it.

Some of those buildings remind me of a zombie movie. Acres of empty cubes, offices, conference rooms, break rooms. It’s depressing to think about what we’ve lost in terms of culture. I couldn’t imagine being 22 again and joining a company under these circumstances. And we wonder why Gen Z doesn’t seem to give a cr-p like we did. I didn’t give a cr-p about the work at that age either, but there was more to the company than my assigned tasks and an annual review.

The people working in the lab have been back since June 2020in the HQ. So it's been about 3 years now. On any given day, parking lot is at least 70% full in our place.

Let's see, in all seriousness - If a person is an office worker, they can:

  1. Sit at home and call into meetings. Fix and easy lunch, then walk the dog. Call into the afternoon meetings, then do the 1 hour of honest work they are allowed to do each day between meetings.

OR

  1. Commute in, sit in a 'hot seat' cube farm, stare at the same Teams meetings, pack a lunch or overpay for the cafeteria, rush home to walk the dog and still not get as much actual work done.

Easy call.

For the people with actual equipment to work on, it is harder. But even a lot of that staff can work it out to be home at least 1 day a week.

I agree, if a person is coming in, they deserve:

  • A desk/space assigned exclusively to them. (plenty of space on campus)
  • A decent parking space - plenty of room in the garages/ramps these days for nearly everyone in those buildings.
  • A decent lunch at a decent price - Current service is neither.

It's pretty much a ghost town. I'm hybrid in one day a week. All ramp parking should be free, like 3rd & 4th level in 229.

Turn Back the Clock Thursdays are coming soon. Coffee at 1999 prices. All you can eat 1980s salad bar for 4.99. Ice cream sandwiches 1 buck a piece. And 1985 flavored new coke.

And the best of 3M commercials on the big screen. You can to vote for your favorite, like the super bowl ads show. My favorite are the squirrels selling 3M products.

When they took everybody’s assigned workspaces away and put everybody in hotel arrangements is when a lot of people went from Hybrid to remote

Can't tell you how many times I dropped in at night or weekend to help on production issues or finish some project work. How many calls I took in the middle of the night or Sunday afternoons while on-call. All for no more pay but I figured 3M treated it's employees nicely with perks like subsidized golf at tartan, 3M Club activities, etc. I was going to give back.

You'd have to be an ignorant fool or hopeless su----f to do this today (yet a few people do this to look good, foolishly thinking they will avoid getting axed in the next rounds).

It didn't cost 3M that much to give these perks and treat employees well when they got so much more in return. They deserve all of the quiet quitting they are getting these days, and even more still.

The morale is horrible and most have no desire to be around that. Most of the people in there just want to be around their back slapping groupies or they feel forced by their management or sadly think it has any link to helping them avoid the next chopping block. I tried to go in 2 days a week but the dude hangouts was to pathetic. these are the essentially the ones who get special appointments and special rules to play by. My mgr hates it but they only just want their team in to help make them look good.

Well you said it “loyalty was a two way street”. That doesn’t exist anymore. The company is more focused on getting a short-term stock bump through layoffs.
