Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Looking to leave

I have to ask, is there anybody at Medtronic who is not currently looking to leave? The last layoffs round seems to have been the last straw for so many people that it feels like there is a huge exodus in the making right now. Everybody I talk to is sending out applications. Am I wrong?

This company has more than average dead weight when compared to other similar companies. This reality will only get worse as the best move on.

I didn’t find out how much I was being underpaid until I started applying to jobs outside of the company. For a similar role, competitors are offering at least 15-30% more than what I’m earning right now. Since I’ve already hit my three years, what is the purpose of staying with the same company just so I can overwork myself and be disappointed with an annual 2% raise? Leaving is hard but if I am going to be miserable with work, then I should at least get the highest comp for it. TLDR apply to new jobs/do something for yourself or stop complaining

Maybe my linkedin isn't up to date, but I don't see many jobs that would match my salary and benefits that I currently have at Medtronic. So, I'm stuck in this he-l.

After years of stiff-arming recruiters I’m taking every single call I can right now. This was my dream job and it’s turned into a nightmare. It’s utter chaos and disorganization since the RIF/reorg started. Time to go

I can't help but feel bad for the people saying they have hope and are choosing to stay at Medtronic. If your reasoning is keeping vacation, compensation etc... There are companies out there who blow MDT out of the water with their compensation, paid holidays and vacation time. Choosing to spend your entire professional career with one company is not the recommendation from financial advisors anymore. You can move up the ladder faster and get higher salaries quicker if you move every 4-5 years. Stop- drinking the kool-aid. You are just a number to MDT - a poorly compensated one at that.

I have been employed at Medtronic for 30 years and I am not going anywhere (until they walk me out, lol) . However, I do agree that we need change and management needs to go. I have seen many ups and downs, management come and go, there is no clear vision or direction. The right team can bring us back on track.

I am a rarity. I am not looking and hope to be a part of bringing Medtronic back. Yes, not wanting to lose vacation time and where severance is does factor in to a degree. But I think changes are coming that will help revive the company. Sad to see people leave, but if your heart isn’t in it anymore (and I understand why). It’s best for everyone if you go.

Every year there is attrition, this year it's going to be more. So who is at the receiving end ? It's the managers. Think about the increased workload for managers trying to figure out what to do and then suddenly got to hire people, train and execute projects. All this and maybe you get 4% raise. So effectively in this market I am losing money going to work. I feel sorry for the managers, they take most of the brunt during these times.

You are living in a fantasy world. Have fun with them oiling work on you and no reward.

This place is toxic. Can’t wait to leave

Contrary to what the other people in this thread have posted I plan on staying. I agree that Medtronic is a mess which can be very stressful and unrewarding to work in. That being said, for those who step up during this time and can manage navigating the environment, I think they will have access to upward mobility. I can see a very straightforward path for the next step in my career without much competition. I think those who are truly capable and can drive projects that stay with the company have an opportunity to ride the power vacuum up.

I’ve been trying to leave but have not taken any action. My job is remote so I have been hesitant to look elsewhere and I’m nervous if I find a new job, new hires might be the first to go when the company looks to lay people off due to the economy. How is the job market?

Job market will look very different in 6 months so get out now before you get stuck in the unemployment line. The current administration will drive the economy into the hole and I’d hate to be on the bench for 9 months. Jobs are out there. Get them now before it all starts to sink

I’m applying outside of MDT. I’m picky so it may be a bit. Just started applications in April.

I love my team, but this company has lost its way. Also, I’m way underpaid. The 2% annual raises are garbage.

I’m leaving. I didn’t plan on leaving, but a number of recruiters found me on LinkedIn. I got a job 2 levels higher than I am currently, higher base, annual equity, higher annual bonus, and a big sign-on bonus. Medtronic can’t compete with the offers out there. When I told my direct colleagues I was leaving, I found out the majority of them are also looking externally. The only ones hoping to stay are those who have a couple years before retirement.

I left one week after 1st layoff. Too much stress. Recolving management. Not enough recognition. Got a job offer, same salary, same benefits. There is a life out there and it is more rewarding too.

It will be 5yrs before mdt figures out what it wants to be and they still are paying for covidien (remediation mostly). Always keep your resume current and know they are out of the woods. If rdn doesn’t get approved or robots keeps getting delayed they will keep cutting. They need to figure
Out what they are good at again and stick to that. They also need a complete turnover in senior leadership

I don't think a lot of people will leave. The people staying at Medtronic will just coast until they get let go. Productivity will drop, deadlines will be missed, and the quality of our products will be sink. It's going to be a bleak future at Medtronic. Okay, I'm off to po-p on company's time.

I regularly browse job postings, but I have not seriously been applying. My job is remote, which is uncommon for my function. With many companies returning to the office, the remaining remote roles have severe competition. Applying to jobs with hundreds of other applicants sort of seems like a waste of time. But I would love to leave Medtronic. It is not the company that it used to be, and I find that my ideologies are diverging more and more from Medtronic's recent direction.

It was the last straw for me - put my notice in after this. Too much uncertainty and stress at this point.

I think many are frustrated, but only a portion will really do anything. If you started recently your pay is probably above average, and the benefits are good so it makes it difficult. 401k match doesn't vest for three years so that's a bit of a pain to walk away from.
