Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Stopped doing my job until there is an official announcement layoffs at my group are over. Reasonable?

Why would it keep doing my job since my role maybe eliminated in 2-3 weeks? Anyone else in the same boat and struggling with productivity?

I feel like most of us are disengaging.
Generally I would have day full of meetings and inbox filled with mails. But since past couple of weeks my calendar is empty.
It feels like everyone is just waiting. Why stretch the news of the impact so much. Feels like torture.

I read stories, after the final demise, of how employees at kodak acted as the company went into a double digit run of layoffs in the 1990s. Before it was known as quiet quitting, that is exactly what happened there.

People felt that they were screwed if they worked hard or not at all so they decided they would not be married to their job anymore.

Maybe one of the spins, if it gets a non 3M inspirational leader, can break the malaise. But not the M&M&M boys.

GE went through the same thing this century.

You reap what you sow. (not you specifically...) Sucks for 3M the institution and sucks for the peons. People act according to their incentives and this is how we're incentivized.

It seems like many employees have decided that their smartest play is simply to continue to collect their monthly paycheck as long as possible with the understanding that they might be let go at anytime. Don’t work too hard. A sick waiting game for 3M and the employee and a losing game for all parties (3M, employees, and shareholders).

I'm a recent managerial retiree (late 2021 after 35 years when I thankfully got my numbers up to 93 vs the minimum 92 for full pension and medical).

That is EXACTLY how the process works. Two or three levels above me. During one of the more recent cutbacks, I was told I had a "choice" if they needed one of my reports. I could offer person A or B. C thru Q were not options. I had two names given to me. But either way, their work wouldn't go away. We'd need someone else to take on their database work. Period. Thankfully, they decided to ante up another head from elsewhere.

Back in the early 2000s under Mcnerney, we had a lot of say who would be sacrificed on the altar of corporate capitulation to Wall Street. We had to "nominate" a certain number but had some freedom to decide. Legal and HR were involved as well but I felt as a leader I could cut the most expendable. Still sucked letting people go no matter what.

The change to being told who you would notify happened under Inge. Mike has made it an art. No say as a leader.

So yes, enjoy fishing, beer, camp fires, cook outs, and then know you could be next in rounds 3 thru 999.

The way I understand it, the lists are created way high up. Your manager doesn’t even know who’s head they’re chopping off until a couple of days beforehand. A lull in productivity in May will not be remembered come performance review time (and you’ll probably get laid off in round 3 or round 4, anyway). I say enjoy the last week or 2 of spring while we have it and then get on to enjoying the summer. Go fishing, drink beer, walk on some of the beautiful trails around the twin cities.

Intent of this post is for OP to consider this…
You state your new work practices are because your job “may” be eliminated. Emphasis on “may.”
Food for thought: what if the current status of your job is that it “may not” be eliminated but your current actions could greatly influence a reversal of that decision? Don’t make your work short term approach to work create a self fulfilling prophesy. Don’t force your management to change “may” to “will” if they were to discover your these practices.
Not picking a fight. Just sharing personal experience of something that played out years ago with a disgruntled peer.

Had a chance to attend two recent symposia in the HQ.

Very low energy compared to pre covid events and attendance is way down. Lunch attendees far outweighed poster and talk attendees.

Even upper management was missing in attendance. Looks like everyone has pretty much given up.

Agreed. There are plenty of ways to quiet quit even if you are stuck in the office. In my WFH job, lots of stuff can be spread out over a 10 to 12 hour period (emails, data extraction, etc.) While only doing 4 to 6 hours per day.

You look even more dedicated when you send some emails at 630 am and then crawl back into bed for an hour. I watch price is right from my home office and work during commercials. And of course send a bunch of emails right before and after my daily 2 pm nap.

This is the least people can do for the damage done to our GESPP.
