Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Work smarter instead of harder

I hate seeing people overworked and doing two or three jobs at once for no good reason. No extra pay, no rewards. You need to remember you don't owe the company anything. Yes, they're paying you for your work, but you are doing that work already, and then some! You should never sacrifice your own well-being or happiness for the sake of the company. It's important to find a balance between work and life and make sure you're taking care of yourself too.

WD engineers are toxic, same with IT. They play the tribal knowledge game, withhold information, and create silos to protect themselves at the expense of manufacturing. WD managers build teams of incompetent engineers to protect their own incompetence. Watching them respond to IT outages and process issues is like watching the special olympics.

It has been like that for years.
The WD most basic culture is based on not willing to pass experience to others. This is what all new employees sense on the first day.

Some people work hard to try to prevent layoffs, even if WDs executives and their cronies dont care.

If you are still at WD.. you are losing skills.. If you are gaining more skills due to layoffs - think about that for a minute.. and no increased pay, 401K, bonuses etc... Who wants to be a WD doormat?

Re: too overacted. People who work hard are not sacrificing their personal well-being but accumulating or improving their own skills for the next stop.

If it based on $$$, then I expect more senior seasoned engineers would be the target. It could damage our company since not only we lost experienced workers but also create a bad culture that not willing to passing experience to others.

The RIF does not care who is working hard and who doesn't, it's only based on $$$, direct managers did not even have a say on who gets the kick

too overacted. People who work hard are not sacrificing their personal well-being but accumulating or improving their own skills for the next stop.

I agree. But if a company intentionally target those who doesn't work hard as RIF candidates, then it's a different story.
