Recently, division “leadership” told us we needed to earn our way back to corporate investment in our NPIs. They said if we showed profitability gains then we could spend. Sounds like we should take the M&M approach and eliminate half our lab and sell all our instruments and equipment! Then with our amazing new profits we can develop new products…oh, wait…

I think I can guess who your division leader is, if it is who I think it is leave that division (or better yet 3M) ASAP. Her psychological abuse playbook only gets worse from here.

This is the most vile part of 3M's abusive leadership:

  • Function X (marketing, lab, mfg, sales) can't get funding until they show returns
  • Function X doesn't get any funding at all
  • Function X doesn't have enough to do even their basic job, so no returns
  • Return to first step and repeat

It is amazing how after over a decade of trying, 3M executives really haven't figured out that 'cutting your way to growth' is not a working strategy.

I'm reminded of Einstein's definition of insanity.

PS - Personal note, I survived the cuts, but with luck I turn my resignation in next week. So I might not be at 3M much longer.

The BS that is being propagated these days is so absurd that it is hard to comprehend. Just take a listen to any town hall meetings these days....justske sure you are smoking the appropriate stuff while you are at it, since you will really need it.
