RTO is a clear loss in productivity

I work at least 2-3 more hours every day when working from home ~ 6 am - 5 pm. When going into the office I have to spend more time getting ready and drive almost an hour 1 way, starting work around 7:50. Plus when in the office going to the cafeteria to get food, go to the bathroom, run into people in the hallway, I'm away from my computer more than being at home.

This has been my experience as well. I can't understand why RTO is that important to cost the company so much in productivity, since I know a lot of people who would happily undersign this.

I was told that my job can't be done remotely even though I have been almost entirely remote for 2.5 years. I like my job, but I see my role available at other companies as 100% remote. I am applying for those jobs now ...

Unfortunately we all work for the “company” and not for ourselves so we don’t get to make the rules we just have to follow them. I’m sure we all knew this was going to come after the layoffs, I mean they told us it was so it shouldn’t come as a surprise. If it’s not for you, go find a new job like I did. There are jobs out there and if you want to leave because of RTO, more layoffs, etc I’d start looking now because in 6 months the job market could look very different due to the current administration.

The Memphis location has a high rate of highway shootings. So we're not only waiting time and gas going into the office for zoom meetings, but we are also risking out lives.

I, too, work almost exclusively with people OUS. I don’t work directly with anyone in my office. I can come to the office, sit in an anonymous cube and take calls. Or I can do it at home without wasting the time of getting ready and driving in. That’s time I’m using working!!!! I understand if I’m in marketing or R&D. You need to collaborate and get feedback. But my job rarely requires collaboration. As someone said, it’s all about control.

I somewhat disagree - I’m aware of lots of people that are not in the category of working more from home. I often find that people outside of my organization are never available on Teams Chat, miss deadlines, and are overall producing much less. Many people internally that I know that got laid off recently was happy and stated something along the lines of “I haven’t worked much in the last two years so this is kind of nice.” I think there are lots of people that need the added supervision and group pressure to work more. I think it should be up to individual managers - if you trust your people and don’t see declines in work who cares.

The same supply chain, inflation, covid, remote work, etc. issues apply to our competition but it seems that we're the only company having this level of problems requiring mass layoffs. My wife works at Boston Scientific and their hybrid policy is extremely flexible and they actually incentivize people to come in. Free lunches, happy hours, social events, you name it. People come in more than they're even asked to because they WANT to go in, not because they have to. What a concept. Everything being done right now by MDT Execs feels like it's designed to reduce morale. There's a common denominator to many of our issues and it's not our employees or their desire to work.

Having this fight right now. I am based in US but nearly everyone I work with is in EMEA. Many of my meetings may start as early as 6:30 am for me. I might not finish them until 11:30 am. Either I can try to drive in before 6:30 (not going to happen) or I can drive in after. By the time I get in though more than half the day is gone and if I am putting in 8 hours I should be done by 2:30-3. I might have one or two physical meeting with someone in the US all week. No complaints about my productivity, work ethic, or anything, but they need to fix what's not broken. As another said, it's not about productivity, it is all about control.

I agree. I work more hours and more efficiently when at home which is why I just accepted an offer with a company that is allowing me to be remote 100%. This new company is even promoting me 2 levels higher than I currently am at MDT.
