With 3M cutting a lot of jobs at the site, what's going to happen to the city itself?
Back in the 80s, it was considered a decent place to work and live. Then people started moving to Woodbury for more upscale living.
Wonder what tax hit this might have on the city.
Before too long, McKnight Road to the west of 3M Center is going to have homeless tents on the side walk with a bunch of 3Mers who lost everything (including massive losses in GESPP) carrying signs "will work for food and beer"
Mike and his chauffeur will roll up the windows on his dark glassed limo and pretend nothing happened, just like he's been oblivious to everything that's happened the last 5 years.
Not sure why all the dumping on maplewood and woodbury. Still nice places to live based on your income. Schools are ok in maplewood but woodbury schools are A+ ranked by parents. You can walk the neighborhoods at night. Even maplewood is a nice value buy area. Plenty of jobs if you are willing to work for the city or county government. If you get laid off by 3M, get your teacher's license and you are golden working in either city. Even oakwood too.
Work smarter not harder. I'm considering being a science teacher now and enjoying summers off. The 3M severance is still good enough and can use leftover college funds from my kids for my own schooling.
It's not Maplewood (Ramsey County) that will take the worst tax hit.
It is Woodbury, Lake Elmo (Washington County) and points generally east of there, including Wisconsin, that will take the biggest hit. Housing in those places is about to get a lot cheaper soon with all the 3Mers moving elsewhere.
Woodbury is so bad, a person almost can't swing a golf club without hitting someone who is living on a 3M salary. Take away ~1,500 3M salaries from there and it will sting.
The good news is that some local employers are starting to actively hunt for laid-off 3Mers. I think a good fraction of them, but not all, will end up with new job offers before their severance is used up.
Woodbury , lake elmo, cottage grove, all will be ghettos soon!!
Woodbury has had its share of problems lately. Carjacking. Shooting at a HS grad party. It's not just maplewood that has problems.
Your best bet if you still want twin cities living (includes six months of winter) is just across the border in Wisconsin. Commute to twins and Vikings games. Closer to what is left at tartan. Lower taxes overall. Minnesota has gone hard left (thanks to the Republicans hardline on abortions) lately so if you are low income, stay. Otherwise, the politicians reneged on a promise to stop taxing SS (they are cutting taxes for some, but your 3M pension plus SS will put you over the limit so that you will be paying taxes still).
Lake Elmo was always pricey. You might find a bargain now but the taxes will still hit your wallet pretty hard.
