I hate it when leaders invoke The Mission. Its like anytime they have bad news they talk about The Mission. I like the mission but it is used in such a bad way that I am sick of it.

“The Mission” was a uniting force for a company that watched out for its employees and customers and in return those employees and customers felt a part of something special. It wasn’t just words as it is now, a slogan with no substance. Nobody is uniting behind this anymore because, as someone pointed out, leadership is not demonstrating their commitment to “The Mission”.
I totally agree! It means absolutely nothing now that Earl is gone.
We have new sr leaders like the Covidien re-treads and Geoff who use the Mission cynically to get people to feel they are doing something important, but to these leaders MDT is just another company, its all just numbers. There are still people who keep it as it was intended and there are less and less every year.
Yea, sadly the mission is dead at MDT. It is only trotted out to try to keep folks whose morale is in the cr-pper to stay on; hence only the lip service.
I remember the days when leadership was like; we hire slow, fire slower, and never layoff because we have a duty to our employees. Sadly that tenet is gone and not even given lip service anymore.
Words and actions are two different things.
Current leadership loves trotting out the Mission as justification for things like this RIF. Actual commitment to the Mission would have better addressed the issues before needing a RIF.
Don’t forget, Geoff made a big deal of rolling out his “Mindset” within weeks of taking over. 60 years of the Mission wasn’t enough, he has to put his own stamp on things and had to do it right away. That should tell you all you need to know about how much he truly values the Mission.
Yes, the fact they used the mission as part of the rif communication was absurd. The layoffs were done so the books could be balanced for q4 reporting. The fact is ‘Medtronic has been on cost controls almost every year for the last 5 yrs at some point. He-l, they even stopped giving recognize points
The mission still stands regardless of overly used by leadership or not. The leaders must demonstrate that they do believe in the mission. Otherwise, employees may not believe their work really make a difference in patient lives.
My mission is to be financially independent and retire early - LOL.
