Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Is anybody else having trouble sleeping?

Instead of getting some rest, I'm stressing and constantly refreshing this page. I didn't get a meeting invite yet, but I know many will go out tomorrow, so it's small comfort. I'm in a position where losing my job would affect my entire family drastically, even with severance. I hate feeling so helpless about what's going to happen to me.

Like someone commented your chances are way less likely to be laid off. It would be nice to be done with this so people can relax, and sleep

I have been feeling like this for the past 2 weeks. My emotions at home have been less than perfect and my sleep has been complete sh-t. Whatever side we are on, it will be stressful. Over the past month I’ve met quite a few people (in person) who had been laid off from MDT in the past and every single one reassured me it was the best thing to happen to them - they got job offers from companies that were a better fit for them with higher pay. I hope you get better sleep soon.

The best thing you can do if you can't sleep is write down all your job skills and all the projects and tools you used. This will help you build your resume. Start looking at jobs similar to your current job online. Use the work "remote" if you need to find a job that may be far away and you can't move to another state. But spend these few hours starting to look. You will feel a lot better when you realize how many job openings there are. Make sure you make a note of all the job links that you would like to apply to. During the first few weeks, if you applied for many jobs, you will get lots of calls for interviews. But interviews are tough these days since you're competing with younger energetic crowd. But one thing the younger crowd does not have much of is experience. Sell yourself on the experience, the different skills and tools you have used. The difficult projects you did to meet delivery dates. Start writing down everything you did so far in your career. And then make a great resume. If you do get laid off, don't feel so bad because million of people have before you and most found jobs. Do NOT get depressed. Do NOT get depressed if your colleague finds a job before you. Do NOT upset yourself and just be positive. My entire team of 50 people, at my previous company, got laid off. A guy who was 60 thought he would never find another job. He tried and tried and never gave up. He saw everyone get a job but him. Then after six months, he finally got a job that he enjoys. So don't give up. Talk to your friends and family. They are your best support. And do NOT get LAZY! Do NOT give up. Keep an open mind. Keep sending out your resumes. The job market is not going to cool down anytime soon. We are still only at 3.6% unemployment rate, adding 286000 jobs just last month. Be positive. And make sure you have different resumes for different jobs that you apply. You can always write on this site, if you need some moral support. We have all been through some tough times, and we will be glad to help you get through it.

chances of not being laid off and >>>>> than chances of layoff. they're probably cutting 5-6%, meaning you have a 95% chance of making it through

count sheep and sleep bro you're gonna be fine

I wrote some talking points down to prep for my discussion. Too bad Medtronic lost their patient focus.

I’m in the same boat as you. I’m laying in bed and frantically checking this site and my email. It doesn’t help so will have to do my best to distract myself and fall asleep until we hear an official announcement.

Stress comes from things you cant control. As of now, you cant control whether u get laid off or not. Its understandable that you worry since its human emotion but rest assured that God has a better plan for you if anything happens.

In 2009, I was laid off (like most of us were) from a company that consolidated overseas R&D operations and got rid of an entire U.S. R&D dept. I was informed I was being laid off on the same day that I closed escrow to my first house--I had to leave the meeting to pick up the keys to the house I could no longer afford.

As bad as I felt at the time, I assure you, it all worked out for the best. There will be similar stories over the next weeks and months. Stay strong, keep the faith, everyone winds up in a much better end-state.
