34 years if wotk and 6 week severance for a 59 yr old is age discrimination and so typical of IBM.

I understand the need for layoffs - company is going under, avoid bankruptcy. Valid reasons - and a last resort.

At IBM, it is one of the first resorts. Trauma; pain; disruption. These are never good things! Morale is truly bad right now. Rumor is this because of the dividend - imagine losing your job to maintain a dividend? At least it is for a good cause...

It'll just be one person hitting down vote in many private browser sessions. Easy to do but time consuming.

Why so many negative reply’s down? Me thinks it is IBM HR monitoring this site.

Well said @fae. I actually think this is akin to the hunger games. We are “tributes” in a sense selected every year by the Capitol (ie. somewhere between the 3rd floor at Armonk and our FLM.) Our goal is to keep our family fed - no different than Katniss’s. Yes, we all know this is a business- but that doesn’t mean robots and spreadsheets come first… it should above all be a human business.

I think a lot of sellers are not going to make their number for 1H and are at risk of being RA'd in July. Interested to see how bad the earnings miss is tomorrow. But to be fair this isn't just an IBM problem; they are more related to macroeconomic issues than anything.

They should also treat layoffs not like a cut in budget, but a decision to inflict trauma on those affected. Getting laid off is similar to losing a spouse or going through a divorce. IBM is choosing to do this to people. If the media reported, "IBM chose to shorten the lives of 10,000 people today." Instead of "IBM cutting 10,000 jobs", maybe things would change. I get it is a business, and businesses need to be profitable and make strategic decisions, but a little empathy goes a long way. Also, companies like IBM should be damn sure these layoffs are done for the right reasons, not just to make a select few richer.
