Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Unsure what to do

I've been with Western Digital for three years, and my coworkers know that I have ambitions to advance my career. They often advise me to be adaptable and broaden my skill sets. However, given the current situation and the uncertain future at the company (layoffs seem to be the only certainty), I'm unsure if it's worth continuing my efforts here. Should I give it a shot and try to make the most of it, or would it be better for me to move on before investing more time?

Leave. if your in HDD, you only have the big guys left as customers. if your in SSD, it will soon be run the Japanese and they will protect their workers, not US based.

I've seen stellar people let go. It's not what you give to the company, it's how much the company needs to pay you. At three years, you're still cheap. If you make it, eventually the axe will come and then it will be hard to switch.

Leave. You'll thank me later.

Unlike other tech companies which also in temporary downturn, this is a declining business. I personally could not think of any reason to recommend a younger engineer to say here.

You sound like someone I might know. What site are you at ? If you are in your 20s, you should find a career elsewhere. WD is not going to survive.

Get out. Not only the company isn’t stable but the leadership is only rewarding their buddies with advancement opportunities. If you are in “their” circle and in California you might find good advancement opportunities otherwise you will struggle to find meaningful work. In FPE they now want the client leadership to own it all, even when they don’t fully understand the enterprise market. Brush up your resume and go elsewhere. Believe me, you will find better pay and a much more satisfying job than anything you can find today at WD.

use the 5000 $ education assistance by WD. get another degree while you work. I did MBA this way. I studied on weekends, holidays, night. it was fully paid, as spread out. Try it, and do not try to find a reason not to. choose something you like. anything

It means be adaptable and broaden your set of skills. Also polish up your CV and start interviewing.

If you didn't notice, the good ol' days when you could work at the same place until retirement are gone.

Your career and job security comes from within you, not from your employer.

my advice (as someone who left 6 months ago) is that everyone at WD should be looking for other companies to work for.

If you can find a job at a company that expects to grow take it. WD is not stable right now.

While your coworkers' advice to be adaptable and broaden your skill sets is valuable, assess the potential for growth within the organization. If layoffs are prevalent and the future looks bleak, investing more time might not yield the desired career advancement.
