Years ago, when layoffs happened, most were assigned to a Monday or Tuesday to allow the person time to process things as well as give them time to work with an outplacement firm. Once upon a time it was Right Associates (nicknamed Wrong associates because if you got referred to them, there was something "wrong" with you).
Things were more humane, even under Mack the Kn--e 20 years ago. HR made it clear that you never wanted someone to go through the depression of a job loss over a weekend.
I would not be shocked if people did get laid off on a Friday. If they have packed people like sardines into a teams meeting to be laid off with a dozen people you don't even know, what bottom is left to this grievous behavior?
At least someone is "winning" (3Ms competitors get some excellent employees).
