Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

This layoff was a total debacle!

If the objective here was to purge the company of its most talented individuals, then congratulations, it worked! What on earth did they base their criteria on when deciding who to drop? And to add insult to injury, why are we seeing fresh-faced newcomers, who've barely spent a year or two here, still occupying their seats, while seasoned veterans with a wealth of experience were unceremoniously shown the door?

I would not be surprised if WD started replacing PHDs and BSs in US with BAs and non-grads overseas after RIFs soon. WD leaders have zero respect for the talented people who work for them.

Tell you a joke: they are trying to reduce the cost and use cheap labor while gave CEO 30M last year. To be honest, WD gave me 300k and I could do a better job than David

We were told that our team is at risk because a team in India is doing a better job than us. But they have 4x the people, resources and equipment. The whole idea is to use cheaper labor wherever possible. This reminds me of how Cisco operated in the 2000s. Product quality does not matter.

I have seen senior people hired three months ago being laid off last round .

Advice : If you are recently hired don’t think you are saved

Bottom line..... this company discriminates against older employees.

Most who got cut are ones that were idling (ex. Jobs moved overseas), site closure, or low performer. At least that is the trend in my group.

From different angle of view, when seasoned engineers were replaced by NCG, how could they support their family and kids? The thing I worry the most is loyalty to a company will be diminished gradually. One guy got layoff told me he kinda regret to spend a lot of time and extra energy to coach new engineers. I don't want to see this kind of culture spreading across company.

to the poster: Do you have children?
how are they supposed to contribute to companies and society, if the welcome is as above. these kids will secure our social security.
I am an 52 year old engineer.

The experienced people are more expensive. Of course there is a valid reason for that…

C suite want nice fat bonus checks for saving the company a few dollars. By the time the company takes a nose dive because of their antics, they will be off to the next corporation to plunder.
