Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Misleading hiring terms. Were you short-changed at COP?

I'm hearing about new COP employees who were promised incentives that were reneged after they were hired. Not a good look for a company that wants to hire the best of the best. Did this recently happen to you or someone you know of?

I was told I would be leading a variety of new projects and leading a team to develop new practices. As soon as I got situated and started making contact with more senior staff, all my efforts were shot done immediately and I got absolutely no support from my supervisor. Just lots of “we e already tried that” excuses. So now, I just punch the time clock and plan for vacations and weekends.

It doesn’t make it OK but some of that has more to do with incompetence from external recruiters rather than a deliberate bait and switch.

I had a recruiter offer a candidate the wrong salary. Really embarrassing.

The disappointments started day one. Terms and conditions of policies are honored on a case by case basis. Be especially careful with promises made when moving into new roles. Get the promotion in hand before changing. Otherwise, you take on a new role, more work and more responsibilities without any additional compensation. The new supervisor will say they need time to evaluate your performance. These delays early in your career add up to huge compensation gaps later.

I came on a year ago and wasn’t promised anything. I lobbied for a signing bonus but got stonewalled, no worries because I’m happy I made the move and am really enjoying it so far.

An issue I have seen going way back is money for higher education. It is available, but only if it is 'required' for your position or function. I only really hear of mostly hi-pots getting money for masters degrees.
