Peter does not comprehend what 3M does and how it does it. The evidence is made even clearer by the post that a Division Scientist is being laid off and going to a competitor. Asinine.

Both he and Roman are poster children for the Peter principle - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_principle

Amazing how much the competition is benefiting from this bloody purge. This will only make things worse for 3M, leading to more layoffs and more talent going to the competition.

All in the name of cost cutting. Are you happy with the destruction you imposed on this once great company, mcnerney?

I had decided I would be happy with a severance package and pounding concrete to find new employment. For those of us who remain, the future isn’t bright. I pray the 40% laid off in my group gain employment quickly. I’ll continue to apply for new jobs, because I am no longer proud to work for 3M and would never recommend it to my children or alumni from my university.

The cuts in MTE tell me three things.

  1. Tireman has no stinking idea how manufacturing works. His last gig there was probably 1990s at ICI.
  1. the company is going to be broken up into many pieces and wants to be so bare bones that someone might acquire a piece of it on the cheap (and then have to rehire people to actually make it work).
  1. In 12 months, all he-l will break loose when production can't keep up with even modest demand because too many people got cut. Tireman will rage at the production people for being lazy and inefficient and will roll out his mantra- the only fixed cost is depreciation.

What a cluster F!

IATD got destroyed as well. At least 40% cut in MTE, no full word on LVS... Lots of good people let go despite having a very full docket of projects...

The mass execution that happened in DMSD today was disgusting. Each one of those engineers contributed to one of the most lucrative platforms in 3M. Summarily shown the door by a guy who got his supply chain expertise selling dog water from the tap at Starbucks.

SIBG was obliterated.

EMD eliminated at least 6 LVS/MT Engineers. Via a lovely group Teams.

ASD eliminated at least 14 LVS/MT Engineers. I believe lions share was MT.

In TEBG DMSD was hit hard. 14 LVS/MT/Product Engineers eliminated, including some very competent and tenured (20+) employees. Two managers in DMSD were also eliminated. I believe JG15s. The 14 engineers were also a group Teams.

My understanding is the surviving MT engineers will be moved to the central MT Organization which is now headed by Tostenrud at VP (Legacy FMSCO which was D. Milings organization for its last executive and R. Rolando prior to that).

I haven’t heard on IATD MT yet, other than I know of at least 1 elimination. I assume they’ve been hit hard too and the “lucky” (or perhaps unlucky in a lot of people’s eyes) ones who weren’t eliminated will go to Central MT.

I don’t think Tireman has a clue what he’s doing. The value of manufacturing being closely tied to the businesses is invaluable, and having one Manufacturing Executive (VP/L3) per division was by far a more effective model than this A3M mutation 3M is currently working in. There’s some sharp people in central MT (as well as an above average amount of useless bloat), but being detached from divisions leads to the too many cooks in the kitchen scenario versus having division presidents having more decision making power over their businesses.

My prediction: in 6-12 months division presidents and maybe even Tireman himself will be furious at the inability to get work done and they’ll add reqs back with less qualified people. Just like they’ve done on a smaller scale since 2019 (just peep the headcount’s reported in annual reports from 2015-2022).

Sorry to all those eliminated recently, especially anyone with a pension or hopes of retiring here. But I truly think anyone eliminated will end up in a better place because company is a complete apocalyptic hellscape at this point. The survivors will be left with increasingly erratic senior leadership who panic react to the slightest noise and can’t stick to a plan if their life depended on it.

Hey Tireman, if you want better results at a much lower cost I’m available to hire. Perhaps you can hire Varys to fulfill all your Kearney and EY needs and you can hire me in the place of Mars & Co. Good riddance.
