Knowing the loans will be forgiven, I have purchased all kinds of things from the online bookstore, including a new iPad and a couple Macbook Pros. My campus cafeteria bill is epic! LOL The government can print money so who cares?
Did you know you can use student loans for living expenses? All my friends are doing it. I haven't paid for anything in years. :)

Just waiting for those student loans I took out to get forgiven.
"I'm a boomer with nothing saved. I spent every penny I ever made acting like a bigshot to my friends and family. I bought cars I couldn't afford, took vacations when I should have been saving my money, bought toys that I didn't use and still owe 20 years mortgage on my McMansion in Shelby Township. I complain about the cost of fuel for my GMC Yukon and my loser kids can't make eye contact and still live at home. I can't afford to retire because I'm in debt up to my eyes but I blame everyone else but myself."
"I'm 25 years old and have 3 whole years of experience, and the only reason I'm not a VP is because the people above me won't retire and open up the spot for me."
Older people need their jobs as badly as younger people do.
That's why all the 22 year olds who keep asking why everyone over 40 doesn't "go away" seems so delusional.
Millenials in their early 40's with college degrees like "English Literature" and "Theater Arts" are strapped with $1.5 trillion in government loans. Somehow that's your fault, even if you couldn't afford to go to college yourself.
It's odd that the parents of the blue-haired, tattooed baristas (still obsessed with pop culture fantasy land) never questioned whether an Anthropology degree would actually land a job. Also odd that they have no shame expecting the lower class to pay taxes toward their debt. I also wonder how many boomers are strapped with much of the $1.5 trillion in loans. How many co-signed, only to find out that Ethan and Ashlee aren't paying and that makes them responsible.
The elephant in the room is that these basement dwellers are now in their 40's. No kids, living with mom and dad in their 60's. They (the parents) bought the over-sized house and all of the toys but obviously can't retire because they are also deeply in debt. These are your coworkers. You wonder why they won't retire? What happens to them when GM does another mass layoff to purge them? Foreclosures, bankruptcies, divorce. Then what happens to the basement dwellers? You are going to see this EVERYWHERE soon.
The food court is really nice at Oakland. I wonder if they will allow Co-ed housing. I’m in my 50s. This is going to be fun. Would be great if we can get another VSP offer right before the free school. These are the best of times.
When college is free, I'm just going to move into a dorm and live perpetually on the taxpayers. Free housing, free food, free books, free school. I think I'll take art classes.
Thanks guys!
PS I wonder if I can get a free Macbook Pro?
Debt doesn't get eliminated, it just get shifted to other people.
If you "forgive" student loan debt, it just gets shifted from the people who knowingly and willingly signed loan contracts to all the taxpayers in the country, including people who already paid off their own student loans, and people who never went to college because they couldn't afford it.
But now they're going to be forced to pay off other people's student loans.
And what happens with people who go to college next year? Will they have to pay off their loans themselves? Or will the taxpayers get jammed again in a few years?
"Now our only hope is the Supreme Court case to see if that's allowed."
Use your critical thinking skills to evaluate what will happen to the financial system (lending), the relative value of an education, the job market, the value of the American dollar and inflation if $1.5 trillion in debt is eliminated.
Banning student loan cancellation was written as a separate bill that passed both houses of Congress, but got vetoed.
Now our only hope is the Supreme Court case to see if that's allowed.
GM paid off all of my student loans after I signed the ESG pledge.
Now I'm debt free and can go on that Viking Cruise I've always dreamed of.
Congress keeps shoveling money at them to show they're patriots, but DOD can't pass a simple audit showing they're not wasting or stealing a lot of it.
You're confusing GM with the federal government. Though, it may be hard to tell the difference sometimes. The key difference is the that GM only indirectly squanders your tax dollars.

I think student debt cancellation was banned by the debt ceiling deal.
Also, payments and interest on student loans are unfrozen.
Our president is going to approve the cancellation of student loan debts soon.
Then we will all be able to buy houses.
Troll..
All who responded fell for the troll.
Lots of GM workers like to complain though.
Go figure.
Things haven’t even gotten interesting!
People want to hire low pay employees not high pay
Los of people are losing good paying jobs at Google, Amazon, Meta, and GM.
But Taco Bell can't find anyone to hire.
nO oNE wANts tO wORk
For 7.25 an hour.
People have jobs, but they don't pay well.
Everyone blames greedy workers for inflation, claiming they ask for high wages.
But clearly workers aren't getting the money. They have to borrow money for food.
And companies keep announcing record profits, go figure.
Seems like someone should investigate greedy companies for price gouging which causes all that inflation.
44% of Americans expect to take out a "buy now pay later" loan within the next year.
21% are using BNPL to BUY GROCERIES.
Average interest rate for BNPL loans: 36%!!!
Yet, the unemployment is said to be only 3.5%.
There's something very, very wrong going on.

Why give any special treatment to id--ts that get ridiculous degrees as if it is a hobby that serve no purpose in their future or jobs. "Multidisciplinary studies, criminal justice, and religion, the second was a masters in accounting, and the third was a masters of divinity in theology and hermeneutics" . two are BS degrees. and she is 59 and now she work up to look at how much she owes? was she partying all this time till now? and she is in accounting and doesn't know how compound interest work so she is surprised now? her payments not even cover the interest rate.
She’s too far into life to recover from the errors of her ways. She racked up a mortgage payment in loans, without having the financial intelligence to know what she was walking into. She will be indebted to school debt until the day she passes from this world.
I’ve helped coach people I care about into less than 10k in student debt upon graduation, for a bachelors degree from a prestigious college. Yes college isn’t a necessity, as it’s only one path up the mountain. Yet, some people do want a degree for their chosen path, so I help. Choosing to be, or willfully remain financially ignorant or stupid, is a death sentence if you get it wrong in life. I emphasize efficiency when it comes to finances in my family life, and to those I care about. That’s not to say not have fun, but it means don’t eff up in ways you can’t recover.
She is one of those shining examples of getting it very wrong in life.
Take your hating on college loan payoffs to Reddit. Your segway into the topic is weak.
There are no companies to my knowledge that will pay off existing student loans.
GM has a program that will partially reimburse you WHILE you are in school for AN APPROVED PROGRAM.
People who rack up hundreds of thousands in debt while having no intentions of paying it off are deadbeats. Losers. They are not victims.
Looking to the government or a corporation to assume your debt is slave mentality.
There's no free lunch. Someone, somewhere must pay for it, with compounded interest. Look at what the stimulus checks did to inflation and then project that onto generations of people who refuse to work. Professional students, burdening you and your children's children until America becomes Venezuela.
How did that happen?
She got a degree in accounting, so she should understand numbers and money.
But she also got a degree in theology, so she believes in magic.
Uh, no. Any student loan taken to attend college is an agreement between the student and the college. GM wasn't in the picture when this agreement was signed.
