Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Nice change

It's good to see somebody from the leadership go through what so many ordinary employees had to go through. For once it's not us being unceremoniously dismissed, and I'd lie if I said that didn't make me smile. I could get used to this, even if I doubt that anybody else will follow, sadly.

He lives in a $3M house, with more bedrooms and bathrooms than he has fingers. Not an ordinary employee. But yes, I also have enjoyed the irony of this situation.

Vale may lose half of his millions if the buzz about his wife leaving him is true. Sure, he'll still have millions but half of what he had and that's not counting the 10s of million he would have fleeced from shareholders as CEO.

Vale isn't going through what so many ordinary employees had to go through. First of all, Vale is nowhere close to living paycheck to paycheck. While he's losing out on millions of dollars in compensation, he doesn't have to worry about putting food on the table or paying the kids' college tuition like many of the 8500 rank and file who were let go. Secondly, Vale was fired for cause for "inappropriate personal conduct and violation of company policy" that was investigated and verified. He brought it on himself, unlike the thousands who were let go through no fault of their own. This isn't a sea change where executives will now be held accountable for delivering growth and making 3M a better company going forward. If anything, this is further evidence of ethical and personal responsibility failures at the highest levels of the company.

One has to wonder if Vale knew the grim reaper was coming for him when he made his infamous townhall comment about not cutting more people sooner.

I doubt it. This was probably a series of previous harassments or relationships that he thought were buried in the Oakwood landfill along with all of 3Ms forever chemicals. Finally, someone(s) spoke up, maybe because they saw he was going to be CEO and it was time for him to pay the piper.

Good riddance!
