Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Overhiring

What I don’t get is why did everyone, including GM, think it was a great idea to go on such a huge hiring spree post-pandemic? The massive price hikes and demand in vehicles/services/etc were obviously not going to last forever as supply came back. It should have been used as an opportunity to safeguard themselves against the future recoil.

This right here shows just how shortsighted our management is. They don't know to look beyond the next few months. That's exactly why layoffs are their solution for everything, even if everybody knows it's just a short-term solution. The last few years are a perfect showcase of management's failure, nobody else's.

Their decisions may seem shortsighted, but they know exactly what they are doing.

Car parts aside, think of all the products that are made in China.

Sneakers, clothes, TVs, laptops, iPhones, furniture,... probably everything in your house was made in China.

If China imports stop, what are you going to do when your air fryer breaks? Good luck finding another one to buy that wasn't made in China.

None of you are seeing the big picture.
China has surrounded Taiwan with warships.
The minute they take over, it will be an epic event that totally changes your reality in the same way 911 and Covid-19 did.
The U.S. Government will either capitulate, declare war on China...OR just issue sanctions.
Each one of these actions will have drastic repercussions.
Capitulation will make the U.S. stance toward Russia seem phony and will undermine the Ukraine war.
War on China could mean nuclear annihilation. At the very least it means losing hundreds of thousands of young people in a war.
Sanctions - the likely scenario would mean no medicine, electronics, manufacturing parts or raw materials. China would confiscate U.S. plants, property and equipment on the mainland. Of course there would be no GM, Tesla, Apple and others due to the cutting off of slave labor and parts.
We are literally on the edge of the abyss as people worry about petty things like how a GM reorg would look like. Wake up!

When ISPs occur, they need to fire a younger employee along with the older one to avoid a ADA-based (age discrimination) lawsuit. They hire excess under-40 workers knowing some will be sacrificed.

One reason is there is a bullwhip effect at play in inventories, commodities, and markets - including labor. Executives can leverage this to look great in the short term, get bigger bonuses, etc. The common worker is just collateral damage who sufferdy the backlash.

So over hiring is just a way to practice age discrimination without getting sued.

When the inevitable layoffs occur after over hiring, you claim you're just "rightsizing" by getting rid of the expensive employees.

Total shocked pika chu face that they tend to be older.

Those who can't do, teach.

Those who can't do, teach, or have any other skills, manage.

They know exactly what they are doing, overhiring gives them an out for laying off higher cost employee's while getting tax benefits for restructuring.
