A broad statement that people with over 30 years at IBM get 5-6 months is absolutely not true. Google Milwid v. IBM for a recent example.

This is 100% incorrect. Also, not particular to simply consulting.

I'm the one who answered the question in another post about how people are selected for layoff. And also one other too. In the case of your observation dozens of D and up have been selected for RA. Or, demoted to a non-D+ band, usually a 10.

This is how it works. A D gets pushed to a 10. They lose RSA's and AIP. A C may be demoted to a D. Unusual to go from a C to a 10, but it has happened if that individual really wants to keep a job. Or they offer a retirement package. However, usually, even for people with over 30 years at IBM, and an exec, the payout is no more than 5-6 months. Really awful

Also not simply "on the bench". HQ also

Guessing anybody, any letter band, that is on the bench.

It is my understanding that upper management (bands A-D) do not get RAs...if there was an issue of some kind, they would either be fired outright or given early retirement. (I've never seen either happen.) They are not treated like ordinary employees.
