I am extremely anxious even though I have colleagues who do not worry in the least because they think that their positions are safe. I don't know what makes them so sure of themselves.

I would willingly leave on my own or get laid off, terminated if a new leadership team were announced prior to next earnings call. A vote of no confidence by the board should have already taken place. MR, MP, PG, all three should either resign, (fat chance) or be fired and replaced. They are fresh out of ideas, and should be fresh out of time. I'm no short timer either, have fought like he-l to make things better, improve customer service, push for sales, none of it matters at all. You cannot win an uphill battle when your top leadership is so short sighted all they can do is try to preserve their own jobs and burn everything elsr to the ground. The only thing that will turn this company around is new leadership. First you have to fight the litigation, even if you didn't cause issue's, we need better lawyers. People will follow leaders with substance, and one's that share even if it is painful truth. They will not follow empty suits who are wasting time and money AND ONLY LOOKING OUT FOR THEMSELVES.
I tell others that if a job needs to be cut, it would be mine first as those reporting to me can report to my manager easily. But at the same time, I let my manager know how I am comfortable in handling all the issues that they wish they didn't need to handle. I am fully aware and accept that my role might be made redundant. 3M is not life, and there is life after 3M. Don't think that you are worth less if you don't work for the company. You still have a lot to contribute to the world, working for other companies or yourself, eventhough it might seem scary when you think of it now.
Some really good advice in this thread. I would propose that basically nobody's job is safe and that everyone make reasonable preparations that they might be laid off.
A good plan to start from:
- Make sure your resume/LinkedIn is up-to-date
- 6 months or more of living expenses in liquid accounts ready to go. A year would be better.
- Wait on any 'big' expenses if you can. (i.e. Can the car make it another year?)
- Consider any cuts you might make to expenses if you were laid off.
- Relax! If you get laid off, take the severance and enjoy a bit of unplanned sabbatical.
There is no stigma in being laid off anymore. It happens to most people in today's society.
“ Of course I learned to lower my consumption too but you can not know how much happy you are by being free.”
This is so true. It’s almost shocking what a difference it makes not to live in abject te---r and know that you can make it a good 6 months to a year if needed. Life literally seems fundamentally different. It’s almost like the Kevin can j%#@$ Himself show where half the show is in monochrome and the other half has laugh tracks in color.
And, after a few months of living frugally, it almost becomes fun and the money spent is more rewarding,
At least for me and my family it’s been that transformative.
There is life outside of 3M. Just accept it!
That anxiety is running high among a lot of people. Don’t feel alone; make a plan (update resume, linkedin, review expenses in case you need to live lean for a bit) I’d venture to say that people who feel so confident might just be as a mechanism to cope.
From what I’ve seen and heard, managers were not consulted and perhaps in an effort from HR to seem impartial, layoffs didn’t consider making the least impact on teams. I’ve seen 20 year laid off.
Tireman made it clear no one is safe.
Hello after 4 times that my position is suppress I am not afraid anymore and ready for the next run. So the answer is to be prepared and you will feel better. You feel better when you can be the actor of your situation deciding from your own to stay or go away and it is better if you have this possibility. Myself as I can not retire just now I spare from the first wave of job cuttings half of my salary for the next run when I will be able to purchase my freedom... And today I am happy that I am ready. Of course I learned to lower my consumption too but you can not know how much happy you are by being free.
