Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

How to track “Quiet Layoffs”?

I hear of people being let go from here and there. There is no consistency in why people are being forced out.

Does anyone have idea about how many employees IOL had last year, and how many are left now?

Alberta selected a pro business government. This is how business have always been run, nothing new, USA or Canada and texas is worse. If you want a socialist government, there is NDP or liberals (they are centre right or somewhat pro business).
Imperial oil and ExxonMobil are aggressive in pursuit of profits, have always been and that is why they were successful relatively speaking. Tesla and FANG etc are the same, they understand culling the herd.
Suncor is also the same, so was Shell before leaving the oilsands.

They are also pushing out those who speak up too vocally about how we are not following our own first priority for operating: take care of yourself and all others (ie people first). Fortunately those people usually want to leave anyway, albeit with a legacy of guilt for the ones they leave behind but deeply care about. The severance package is a slight recompense.
How our governments are so blind to all this offshoring of jobs is beyond me. Imperial couldn’t do it if Alberta and Canada didn’t let them.

I just hit 50, and I quit last year. I couldn’t take the stress of not knowing when they will kick me out.

I left on my own terms, with a smile on my face. I am working for a company bigger than IOL now.

If you are in your 50’s, just sit back and enjoy the show. Do minimal work and push back on your supervisor when overwhelmed. You will likely be PIP’d regardless.
Hope to get Pip’d and get walked out with a severance package and bridging benefits. DO NOT QUIT… make them pay you.
That’s what I would do if I was in not 50’s. Unfortunately I still have a while to go.

Not sure where the overall IOL numbers were but there is definitely a reduction in Calgary with positions moving to BA and the TCs. There are headcount targets and the biggest reductions are probably Kearl upstream and overall technical. With the consolidation of chemicals and refining there will continually reduce tech headcount at sites with support from TCs- this is leading some people to see the writing on the wall and leaving of their own to different companies / industries / school which will essentially roll into not backfilling of those roles vs an actual lay off.

Post-assessment cycle here should show how forceful they are pursuing forcing people out on PIPs, early retirement, or other.

Imperials overall plans are to move engineering and other jobs to BTC, MSP, GBC, etc. etc. next 5 years those targets are higher and higher.

Writing is on the wall. The company does not care about you.
