Notice Period Requirement?

So I'm thinking about resigning after the bonus is paid out. Is there a required notice period to give or would I be able to resign efficient immediately? In California for context.

As for resigning immediately that's a career choice, but I have seen hiring managers refuse to ever hire anyone who has done that to anyone.

Managers can talk whatever big game they want, but how would they know this about any candidate? They wouldn't unless they backchannel talked to people who were aware that the employee did that. Extremely improbable.

The same hiring managers have probably no problem to fire you at a moments notice. Ironic isn’t it.

I would wait until the money is in your bank account. I resigned once after the bonus was set but not paid and the payroll dept messed up the next payroll. I got my bonus but it was in limbo until the next pay period. I had to sweat it out for a month. No one does two weeks anymore, if your can pull together a weeks notice that should be enough.

Yea, California is an at-will employment state. You can give notice on Friday. The payroll jobs are submitted on Wednesday… no way to stop them. And VMware won’t either. It’s not an evil company. Incompetent, maybe but not evil. They are not going to block your bonus. Leave nicely and don’t burn any bridges.

I’m doing same here in EU. I have 3 months notice due to tenure. Will negotiate down to 2 months as new employer needs me asap. So plan is to sit at home get paid for 2 months and play some golf, relax, and prepare for next challenge.

Putting my notice in on the Monday the 17th, just to be sure. But yes I am out of here too.

Cali is an at will state. Get your exit on friend. You love yourself for leaving.
