That there will be a dept meeting tomorrow for 30 minutes and not the usual hour. Wonder what’s up? Got bad vibes on this. Feel like the ax is upon us. I have heard that another dept is bringing in a lot of new hires. Guess that is for when the older employees get the ax since we supposedly need to reduce headcount. So sad

Maybe they want to drink some kool aid and its not available due to the competition.
Impromptu meetings like that when everyone’s waiting for the shoe to drop on layoffs are either incompetence or malice. Hopefully someone mentions it at your meeting.
Those kinds of short department meetings usually mean someone higher up is "retiring".

OP: You're reading too much into the short meeting. Could be anything, a re-org, a policy change, some new VP hired, an announcement about somebody leaving. I was let go August 2022 and there was no department meeting before hand announcing it. Relax, you are most likely ok tomorrow.
