What to expect after getting "Expectation Not Met" in Talent Assessment

During my most recent Talent Assessment, my manager left No for Expectation Met.
I discussed about this in my 1:1 to know the reason behind this feedback. Didn't receive any constructive response and got a standard response. I was informed the next steps would be HR would be involved with weekly tracking. This whole thing has been a shocker to me as I'm working on high impact project now and delivered good in the last quarter.
I asked if it's part of PIP and was told I'm being setup for success and it's a procedure by HR to correct the course of action for the Talent Assessment result.

What can I expect next and how long do I have before they go through the lay off procedure which I'm kind of expecting at this moment.

@qg Thanks for the reply. What if I meet all the goals they set me up for during this 3 week period? And, even after that if it's just a formality they are maintaining after making the decision already, how long would the PIP process be generally in Cisco?

I'm not sure when does the documentation process starts at this moment. I was just told to wait for an email update from HR. Considering I'm working on a major feature work, I'll be busy for next 1 month or so until I deliver that and I won't have bandwidth to take time out to look for opportunities outside. It's a tricky situation now for me!!

And what point will they offer a Mutual Separation package?

You want to get paid for being a low-performer? Sign me up for a pip, please!

@OP if you get a ”did not meet expectations,” there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to be “performance managed” out of Cisco.

The first step after a “did not meet expectations” is typically Documented Coaching, which is a formal process, and ER typically assigns your manager someone to help with that. If the specifics in Documented Coaching aren’t adequately addressed (usually in a 3-week or so time frame), then the manager can move to a PIP.

I'm the OP. Thanks everyone who provided constructive and helpful insights. I'll start documenting all my work going forward to see if that delays the LR until I find another suitable position outside. Since I haven't given any technical interviews in a long time, I need to start focusing on that in parallel for my next move. That's my intention of this post to find out from the managers in these forums to check how much time I have for that realistically.

P.S: Sorry some of you are so toxic and blaming either me or Cisco. As far as I'm concerned, it's an usual process in any company who are trying to navigate through business decisions for better outcomes of revenue. I created this post to share my situation and get some intel on how to plan further since I'm on H1 and the clock will be ticking the moment they show me out the door.

@j3

I got my first one in 15 years in Dec and was LR’ed in May

yes its a 6months process.

after 15 years? mostly because they realized you are already citizen or became citizen and need your position for new immigrants, good bye.

@j4 if you're a kind of person to say "would of" then I highly doubt you have something beyond a middle school intelligence. it definitely was a performance issue.

Forgot to mention I made goal 13 out of 15 years and 7 of my last ones and would of made goal this year as well so it had nothing to do about performance but made up bulls**t

I have never heard of it. AI is aware of intranet content. See if it can answer some of your questions.

Did you follow this advice and consulted AI? Can you give us a recap of what you learned through AI and what you learned here in this thread?

@hb Cisco is going to continue to remove whoever they can. They see us as numbers and if we’re not leading projects that makes them millions then we’re nothing to them.

They’re tired of coming up with creative ways to get people out, “fairly”. They just need documentation per legal to prevent us from coming back to sue.

You guys need to sok it up and do better. Spend too much damn time on this forum and complaining about how much you guys all s0k at your jobs. If you focus that effort in doing your job, you wouldn’t be here today playing victim.

If no one has told you yet but you won’t get far in life if all you do is play victim.

Cisco didn’t get this far doing what you are doing now. There obviously a cultural misalignment.

Hiring manager needs to weed out the weak that’s holding this company down. I’m so sick of layoffs because we have to trim off useless workers

@eg then it is likely in the tracking/documenting phase. You might have more times but they are managing you out outside of a LR.

You should document everything going forward.

@ec Not yet. Looks like my manager has to reach out to them and plan for it. My manager is insisting that this is not a PIP and it’s only for gauging the performance and providing required support for improvement. Honestly I don’t believe any of this managerial wording since I didn’t get any reason what the “performance expectation” means in the first place. Just wanted to get done with this phase and plan for the safe move next.

So sorry you've been put in this position. I've been w/ Cisco for > 25 years and I've never heard the term "being set up for success" especially after not meeting job expectations. This sounds more like a standard PIP which is typically a 90-day process & in the end, they show you the door. (Side Note: don't pay any attention to the haters on this forum. There's a lot of disgruntled employees at Cisco and their comments are not posted to answer your questions but an attempt to make themselves feel better about their own misery.) Good luck, OP!

@e7 did HR tell you how long the plan will be? That will be the time you have in the worst case scenario! I think it is usually about 30 days.

@dz Thanks for the intel. May I know if you are aware of usually when does this process start and how long the performance tracking would be? I'm trying to get an idea of the timeline for next round of layoffs. If it's towards end of the year or out usual February cycle.

@dh sorry for you. AFAIK, once they put you in a PIP plan with HR, the next step would be (a) working on the improvement plan, or (b) accept a mutual separation agreement package (which usually includes a month pay)

This round of reviews I was forced to set 10% of my org as low IPF. Seems like they're gearing up for another round of layoffs.

@d8 May I know how long can I expect before they LR me if that's the case. I want to prepare looking for other jobs since I'm on H1b. Considering I got this update now in September, I'm little nervous as it's end of the year and most of the companies will in end of FY with less job openings.

I used to work at cisco as a people manager. From personal experience they don't do snything with it even if they put in that you exceed expectations. It is purely cr-p to fill in fir the sake of it. In the end you get LR'd one way or the other.

This is a standard Cisco “management” practice. HR doesn’t do sh1t.

Many go thru this between LR and PIP, all in attempt to cut people and save money.

Please update this board on your progress and journey.
