Recently I had a dear friend get fired without warning from statefarm, she had been there about 10 years. How long will she have medical? Is until the end of the month? Or right away? She has health issues and children, and a single momma, she is obviously devastated, she just wasn’t understanding the job and things changed so much. Thank you so much for your help.

People do get fired for no reason. I didn’t think so until it happened to me. They have you help on other peoples’ files and calls and tell you not to worry about your own calendars, then make an innocuous comment on your review about your calendars. They ask you to help out on following up on a complaint or difficult situation (calls that are complex and take time) due to your knowledge and experience and then chide you for longer call times. Despite being a strong, conscientious and effective employee they can fire you in a heartbeat. It only takes one late calendar or longer call time to say “your terminated” for failing to fulfill job requirements. You’d think there would be recourse but there really isn’t. I’m sorry for your friend. She should check with HR re her benefits and options, and apply for unemployment. She can ask HR for the reason for her termination. Good luck to her. She’ll find her way. I got good advice from one of the attorneys I consulted. He said find what you enjoy and pursue it. Move on. Even with a good case the years it could take and the unlikely positive outcome take their toll.
She didn’t understand her job after 10 years????
Wow wrong for the 3rd time in a row-a new record even for you. SF has to officially classify it as a termination if it was one. No grey area. State law. Nice try d-mb one.
Colloquial language, not precise language. You still shouldn't discourage the attempt. Termination purely for performance can be a grey area, depending on the situation.
Particularly since we don't have all the details on this situation, it hurts no one to say to apply, but that you may be denied.
(source ides handbook, and illinoislegalaid: https://www.illinoislegalaid.org/legal-information/getting-unemployment-benefits-if-i-was-fired )
@4hzg-you just answered the question yourself. . Laid off is not terminated. Illinois law is clear-termination no unemployment. The OP said she was fired. You said she was eligible for unemployment. You were and are wrong.
@3gm, if in IL, they should still try for unemployment, particularly if it was JUST poor performance. I know lots of people (not at SF) who were laid of for performance and received their benefits.
Don't discourage the attempt. Sure, it can be denied, but it should still be attempted.
Most likely excessive use of teeth.
@2tkl -is the reason you never seek advice on this site. If you are terminated in Illinois, Texas, Az or GA you are not eligible for unemployment benefits according to state law.
She is eligible for unemployment. If she worked in claims it wouldn’t be surprising because of the unrealistic metrics. There are remote claims opportunities
Her SF benefits cease 30 days after her termination. I looked into this when I was considering quitting. So, she needs to use her health insurance sooner rather than later.
More crapaganda from resident wing nut.
They probably wanted her gone cause she’s a discerning and hard worker and smart employee who cared amd lives in the real world. Not a fake bubble like most at State Farm amd Country Companies. They only keep the go along unintelligent ones to promote and pay lots to. InfoSec is no different. Every area same game and playbook. Wolves In Sheep’s clothing
History matters. Nepotism rules !!! $$$
fake news
Anyone with more than 10 years should beware because they are up on the payscale and considered a target. Once you reach midpoint you are target. Keep the promise is laughable. Dont trust them.
Some people are overconfident and don't listen to the managers warnings to shape up.
Unless there was some "fired for cause" like stealing, etc....
She will be eligible to continue her insurance with COBRA. It is expensive, but federally mandated.
I don't know her specific situation, but I don't think SF is required to continue her insurance after her last day on the job
She does need to understand her benefits as impacted by the termination. If HR won’t return her calls then provide her with a couple of email addresses of HR so she can ask for further information. It will be hard for them to ignore an email, especially if she asks professionally.
Most likely, she was on a PIP and her manager either never explained that she was in danger of being fired OR the manager did, but not in a way your friend understood or wanted to believe because of their tenure.
Less likely, it was without warning, but not without cause. I've seen without warning happen because of falsifying timesheets, for example.
Well we strictly work from
Home, so shes didn’t do anything in the office, she told me she got fired for not understanding the job after 1 year in the new position that her numbers were too low and she was making to many mistakes, but her Boss never said that she needs to
Shape up
Or ship out, and she got a really good raise, she she is just confused as to why it happened. Is she ommitting stuff? Idk, but my department have let several other people go for similar reasons but I know nothing about these people. Only of her and her situation.
If the story is even real, your friend is omitting details. A ten year employee does not get fired "without warning" unless they did something REALLY REALLY aggregious. So bad that they are immediately escorted off the premises and the locks are changed.
I’m just asking the questions, please dont shoot the messenger do they not do performance shields anymore? All she said
To me was she has been struggling with the new way they are doing things in auto learning the “new ways” and changes I don’t work with her, different department, im just reaching out, she does not have FB and HR isn’t returning her call I guess so I thought I would ask here.
@g-y+1lzVBsS8
There’s 2 reasons you get fired at the farm
Totally not tryna save on a pension.
You’re smarter than your mid line manager.
My guess is OP’s midline manager wanted to be the ultimate single mom,
No one gets fired unexpectedly. You can depend on exactly 0% of the advice or info on this site. Call HR.
Someone who has been here ten years doesn’t get fired unexpectedly, especially if it’s performance related.
