It may be smart. The first week you will not get payed, so it would seem to mean nothing, but if you get laid off within the next 6 months, this may count as your week of not being paid and you may be able to collect a week sooner. I’d call you state’s UI hot line and ask.

Probably not, they are under contracts.
In California you must serve a one-week unpaid waiting period on your claim before you are paid UI benefits. So probably not.
