I've noticed that there are a lot of people here who try to sound like they don't care too much if they get laid off or not. That's a little strange to me. I, on the other hand, am very anxious and worried about what I will do if I am laid off.

Twitter guaranteed every employee at least 3 months severance, and the CEO and all execs were summarily fired but, yeah, getting two weeks from Medtronic is so much more satisfying. And Apple/Google are competing viciously for Twitter's best engineering talent. resulting in many Twitter alums pulling down double compensation for the next three months. At least at a startup you're losing your job after legitimately going out of business. Medtronic is screwing up it's business lines, but there is real profit. Want to see where your jobs and MIP plan went at Medtronic. Check out the $ billions Medtronic spent this year and last year on stock buybacks.
Losing a job is scary because is a reminder of our own mortality, everything comes to an end, it doesn’t matter if it’s tomorrow or 10 years from now, it will happen eventually, is better to accept things you cannot control and try to respond the best you can and adapt to any circumstances, if life is not forever neither any job. Be happy with today’s blessings, tomorrow is never promised.
If you do get laid off, you'll join the ranks of many thousands of us who went through it as well. You will get through it and the other side can be quite bright. Hang in there! Layoffs must be one of the unspoken mission statements.
It’s totally understandable to be stressed. It’s important to remember that you will be OK no matter what happens. You are capable of getting this job at Medtronic, you will be capable of getting another one. You won’t starve, the sun will rise again and you have people in your life who love you. Hang in there
Being laid off is hard- but better at Medtronic than twitter or a start up.
Medtronic will provide 60 days WARN notice, severance based on years of service and outplacement.
Sometimes they pay for cobra- and sometimes they don’t.
Best thing to do is get another job asap- especially if you are over 50.
It is very stressful and scary. I am with you.
