Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Layoffs and the Proof

The December layoffs were proof that restructuring was needed to make a more efficient cost structure, as well as get rid of the deadweight, like the guy hi------g this page most of the time. That is why performance was a big factor in the layoff criteria, and yes, there are very few that won’t fit the mold, exactly. Customer demand remains strong, outside of personal electronics, which is a shrinking segment at GF, and proves product diversification works. Development and customer-engagement remains strong, as those who work closely know.

Even though costs will still need to be more efficiently managed, things are headed in the right direction, evidenced by the latest earnings call. One could look around and see that GF employs more people for a fab-site/wafer output than the competition. There will be more tightening, but GF is headed in a good direction, and those who factually know their self worth, rest assured, good times are being created.

@ 5uzu+1lfIHm0V considering not everyone lives where you do and most folks know east from west, you’re most likely you’re a mo--n

Correction, directly West.

Considering Marcy/Utica is directly East,
and not North, this is likely a fake post.

I got laid off after nearly 10 years. Found a new job rather quickly for a little bit more money and better benefits. You’ll be surprised how different life/work can be outside of Global. The biggest difference has been my new coworkers and myself aren’t complaining and worrying.

It was actually pitched to me by my management chain that this was an opportunity. Since so many are leaving and failing you can swoop in and advance rapidly. Like the mo--n I am I took the bait. 6-7 years later very little of anything has changed. It’s embarrassing and I am actively looking for new opportunities and employment

Everyone I have talked to who left or was laid off seem extremely happier or in a better place. And it comes up in every conversation about how they are happier and the work level stress is significantly less. Interesting the word “brainwashed” has come up a lot as well. With respect to how GF mgt had brainwashed us into this working style and environment and portraying it as normal.

I gave 2 weeks notice yesterday. Heading North next month to Marcy, NY. Wolfspeed/Cree smaller operation but they were very competitive with the offer. I’ve made a good living with global over the past 5 years but the low morale and uncertainty with layoffs were too much. My last raise was 2.1% after global had a record year in profits and growth.

Toxic environment at GF. I’ve noticed in these threads that the people who got laid off seem happier generally. Double edged sword. Those who remain are probably grateful they didn’t have to find new jobs but at the same time I doubt they are truly happy at GF. For those of who found new jobs and got a good severance congrats and good luck13

This thread shows how bad is distrust among employees in GF. Very clearly GF is on the road to bankrupty. Only rejected and failed Will think of making a career here.

The only thing you’ll be hosting is the bank’s realtor when they come in and appraise your home, in foreclosure, because your lack of employment has caused you to go belly-up since you were laid off.

@ 4vik+1lfIHm0V I suppose licking A$$ can pay the bills. But not nearly as well as collecting full salary, QPB, Severance, Cobra Money all the while working and getting at my new job. Life is good ✌️ Even buying a brand new truck in March with some smart money. Thanks

I'll get a raise along with a steady paycheck. You get unemployment and the eternal shame of being tossed out because you're worthless. That humiliation is eating your very soul.

When a fab opens to hire any NCG with a degree (Arts and humanities included) for an engineering job (not HR job), that shows you how well-managed they are.....

@3nuy+1lfIHm0V Getting laid off from GF will always be better than having to badge into this place. Unless of course, you enjoy licking your managers bu-t and wondering when raises are coming.

No we all know performance is meaningless at Globalfoundries. Good, bad, great, mediocre it doesn’t matter at GF. If you want to stay at GF just keep head down and do bare minimum. No point trying hard it won’t matter you get rewarded for it or appreciated dodging it. GF is a sweatshop. If you want a career and logical career advancement based on merit then get the he-l out of GF

All these losers trying to convince themselves and the world it wasn't performance based. It was, and you're unemployed because of it.

Keep the largest headcount you can = Cut the biggest salary. It’s wasn't personal, it was a numbers game. Next round will be equally impersonal and short sighted.

OP doesn't understand how the layoffs worked. I will give you the inside scoop of exactly how it worked. Basically, each manager was given their current budget and then their go to lower budget. Each manager had to decide how to meet their new budget. Sometimes one had to take a higher-level position even if very good performer and cut that instead of cutting two lower-level engineers. The Dec 2022 layoff was not directly performance related; it was who do you want left behind in terms of the biggest perceived value vs. salary post layoff. Tough decisions had to be made in many cases.

I was the highest paid on my shift/team, was also the oldest. Always had a good performance reviews. Pretty obvious they targeted compensation. I’m not really upset, it actually worked out better. They gave me a very generous severance package. $60k+ in total severance.

Layoff had nothing to do with performance. I was best performing in my team but rejected to lick a-s. All a-s lickers survived even if their performance sucked.

If things were heading in the right direction they wouldn't be selling fabs and laying off. In fact, you might actually have got your raises on time and more than the bare minimum QPB. Just sayin. 🤷‍♂️

@OP+1

I wouldn't say things are heading in a good direction overall. In order to save costs, the company is outsourcing many resources. When you outsource resources, you end up with a bunch of newbies who never last more than 2 years in general and you never develop experts. This outsourcing will make GF offerings average or below average in general. In addition, GF had to sell off a fab and take the proceeds from that to help the final 2022 numbers. Other than not having a strong development organization due to mostly newbies in low-cost geos the other part is their customer diversification. They are still so heavily dependent upon the mobile space something like 40-50% of revenue from that space which came purely from the IBM acquisition. However, they are losing market share in mobile space TSMC and UMC are actually leading them in certain technologies. GF has been very slow to ramp in the automotive area, with revenues something like $500M or so only it is still a small part of their business. However, the GM agreement might help this but not clear how much yet. Right now, companies which have a high percentage of their revenue in automotive area are thriving, others business areas are getting beaten up because of the recession/inflation.

GF's biggest issue is the technologies and PDKs they are producing are not industry leading and at best average but most of the time far behind TSMC. We used to claim we were differentiated but that just isn't true anymore. So now you put yourself in a bidding war with UMC and TSMC since they have similar or better offerings and GF will lose that battle every time. It all starts from outsourcing resources and having newbies doing development instead of an experienced workforce, cost cutting. The PDK GF offers to customers is a prime example, that team has been 95% or more outsourced to low-cost geos with mainly newbies doing the work and other than a couple items inside the PDK there is nothing there that UMC and/or TSMC doesn't have, in many cases it is better than GF's. Have you ever seen the GF PDK benchmarked against the competition? You won't because nobody will like the answer inside GF!! When GF technologies have been benchmarked against the competition it clearly showed GF was behind in so many areas but due to cost savings GF just ignores. The PDK is the face of the technology and what the customers see and get to test drive. Not having a superior PDK and technology offering will lose customer interest in GF moving into the future. This will make for very rough seas ahead in the future for GF competing in a market where supply exceeds demand!!
