Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Who cares about productivity these days anyway?

Bill George, former chairman and chief executive of medical technology company Medtronic, says those are among the reasons he has always been wary of mass layoffs. George, author of True North: Emerging Leader Edition, predicts that if 10% of an engineering group gets laid off, the remaining 90% will be sitting around in the cafeteria worrying and swapping rumors instead of inventing new products.

This is an excerpt from an article about the negative effects of layoffs to the company culture: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/ceos-arent-dealing-with-the-toxic-fallout-of-layoffs/2023/02/14/048ffef6-ac62-11ed-b0ba-9f4244c6e5da_story.html

Employees have never worked so hard. I’ve never experienced anyone watching Netflix while working - give me a break. People are exhausted from being responsible for more with less. And the processes that we have to navigate to actually get things done around here are what is holding mdt back. Things move slow here, not because people are checked out but because they are laden with processes and ancient tech.

Medtronic employees are good for nothing seat warmers! I left just after 1 year of being there. I would have been unmarketable if I stayed any longer.

Those lazy good for nothings. Close the cafeteria, eliminate the coffee pot. Force employees to produce. Micromanage until the non- workers self eliminate, it’s cheaper in the long run.
If workplace culture is toxic enough, you to can assist. Middle management needs to step up and obtain 15 minute status reports. Agile is too slow, now we have zoom, middle management show have mirror screen of everyone’s laptop/phone, how else are you going to stop the work at home watching Netflix while pretending to be in meeting with mic muted and video off?
