Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

"Work After ISP"

GM could have picked different ways to save $2B without threatening us about layoffs. There are other ways to save $$$. Example, freeze promotions for certain period or don’t give bonuses for couple of years. I am sure most of us would’ve preferred that over the layoffs that have no basis.
Those who will survive the ISP are going to suffer as well. Not only workload will increase but work environment won’t be the same! When you give your job everything you’ve got, work nights and weekends to make the timeline, do your best to save the company $$$, and proudly share on social media that you work for General Motors… and at the end you find out that none of that really matters and you could be eliminated anytime for nothing that you’ve done wrong.
If you can’t work for someone who is not trustworthy then how can you still work for GM!!!
Unfortunately, GM does not care about your feelings...one day you show up to work and find out your friend or a team member was let go. One day this person is going to be you!

I wish we could all put in our 2 weeks notice before the ISP starts!

Can you at least try to make sense?

Imagine how much trouble GM must be in financially if they are this desperate to shed thousands of employees.
What do higher interest rates do to car sales?
How do banks react to defaults and how do they position themselves for risk?
How many Americans are maxed out in debt?
What are the real unemployment numbers?
How do consumers cope with inflation when it comes decisions on large purchases?

The things you suggested wouldn't be enough to save $2 billion.

At most companies, labor is the biggest expense, and the only place to save real money.

The machine that chews people up and spits them out is self destructive.
On the engineering side, this has been going on for decades.
There are only so many people that can do the job, so they are let go and them come right back as contractors; either working for GM or with a supplier.

How loyal would you be if you've given your heart and mind to these people, only to get laid off every time there's a downturn, which causes emotional and financial distress? People end up losing homes, divorced...drinking issues...
GM pats them on the head and tells them what to think and how to behave each time they are back for more.

On the outside, the smiles and "behaviors", ESG pledges, and DEI initiatives look like GM is woke and soft; that they CARE, but the reality is that these people in upper management are ruthless pricks that would watch a drowning man while eating a cheeseburger.

You just did not fit in with our robust performance driven portfolio and will be let go because of it.

When GM conducted layoffs in 2019, they claimed $2B in projected savings; however the strike later that fall cost them $4B in costs. So whatever they claimed to save from layoffs, they lost all that plus more on strikes. Mary Barra may be a "media darling" but she is terrible CEO

US corporations are about quick money RIGHT NOW, instead of waiting for a longer period. You should know how it works already :)
