Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Culture has been totally destroyed

I remember when I first came here what the culture was like and it is literally impossible to compare it with the culture as it is now.

It's just amazing how quickly the culture here has been destroyed isn't it?

The VERP and subsequent dragging out of the RIF with announcing its coming bit very little happening as of yet is terrible leadership in itself. Do they think this is helping to jumpstart employees?

I’ve survived 3 RIFs in my MDT career so far, and the only reason I want to survive another is that I only need 5 or 6 more years before I can retire. Starting another career at this point is not appealing. Working here isn’t either, but it’s less traumatic.

Product launch? Don't be funny. Most of R&D is off the project the first moment they can be pulled and then they are shielded from the production consequences of their decisions and they never learn the tough necessary lessons to prevent the same mistakes the next time.

It's no wonder we have reliability and production/supply chain issues.

No more real engineering leaders. Most folks in mid-level leadership positions have never launched a product in the last decade, despite the awards that line their desks.

Re:’ As someone who is informed about potential workforce…’
I appreciate the feedback. Id very much appreciate details as you receive them!

Truly: I must acknowledge that I realize a lot of the posts are boasts… or guesses at best…however; many of us are desperate. Not to keep a job. But to keep the dream.

MDT does not manufacture just another Blood Pressure med. If we did, it’d be a job like many others. We choose to be/stay here. Even though MDT is 10+ years behind in systems and databases…there is the incentive to protect and bandaid what we have…for what we want and strive for…the ‘true’ Mission.

However, we , the employees,
are beyond bandaids and stickers. The systems are failing even with the talent we can retain. Of all the things to invest in…technology for infrastructure and innovation is poor (or none!!) year after year. And this is true for at least the 10+ years I have seen. And MDT was at least 15 years behind when I starter.

MDT may tread water as a ‘major player’ but will not be a competitor without improving infrastructure.

We need highways and trains. All we’ve got are dirt roads.

There may be pain to get there (for us all, including stock holders) but I hope stakeholders see that the pain is worth the effort and expense.

It's actually a blessing to get Rf'd from MDT, good severance package and frees you from the shackles. I left voluntarily and it's awesome to be out of there. Hurry up before GM hires an Enron and Blockbuster Video exec to come in and fix stuff. The exec team team is driven by Walmart, Comerica, Best Buy, GE and who knows who else.... All cr---y companies and cultures, expect more of the same for years to come.

It sounds like it is time for many to leave, including many of us who haven't been laid off. Right now I am using as much of my work time as I can to develop skills for the job I want which is not here.

Nice of one of the fortunate few who is informed to come here and criticize the other 90,000+ of us twisting in the wind for trying to figure out what’s going on.

Perhaps if those in the know - or even better, those actually making the decisions - shared some real information rather than the usual corporate speak there wouldn’t be need for such speculation, let alone the continued uncertainty, demotivation, discontent, and on-going rot of company culture. How tone deaf.

So much for “moving with speed and decisiveness” and “getting results the right way”.

4/7 I'm hearing, sorry about your spoiled Easter egg if you happen to be unlucky enough to get the tap on the shoulder. IMHO

As someone who is informed about potential workforce impacts across Medtronic, I would like to share that 70% of information related to impacts/layoffs is completely incorrect. Actually, this site is much better for venting than a a conveyor of reliable information so be careful not to get sucked into negativity and speculations. There are snippets here that are true but even those have been distorted.

for all the newbies here, site mods don't allow political grunts, gets deleted and they might ban you as well.
also, don't use names (anon forum board, can't name others except for public figures), and avoid curses and insults, not allowed either.

While some may survive this round of layoffs the outlook of Medtronic short term and long term is not good. While we continue to struggle with back orders and and losing market share, our competitors are going to thrive while Medtronic becomes the next GE. This should be a wake up call to all of us to find new opportunities with real leaders and a meaningful mission. Sad to think this but it will just be a matter of time.

We wanna stay… see the re-org…make the best of what is left. Get good leaders. Build up again. But no one is asking.

My group will likely get riffed and folks that want to burn the house down will be kept. Bye big blue…onto something new.

The covidien culture brought with it a harsh, more commercial tone that the folks at the top love. No more old fashioned care for people, and wanting to keep people around forever in their buisnesses. now its "up or out" and chasing the growth number. Used to be doing the right thing got your the growth number. now we have to cut.

You can blame Geoff- but it was Omar who hired and set up Geoff to be his successor. Omar also hired the heartless Chro, cfo, etc. Omar also bought Covidien, Heartware and so many other failures.
Medtronic hasn’t had good leadership since Bill George.
That said, since sarscov2 is a disease of the blood - the cvg businesses should improve as demand increases. That assumed that they can address the supply chain issues…that have been dire for more than 10
Yrs..since Omar was hired.

Yea, when I first joined; you could see the why. And if I ever ran into anyone that was like "Do A, it would be good for your career (even if it wasn't a great deal)", it was easy to say, well they aren't long for the company. And sure enough, they left. But now, it seems that was all that was left. Those that had the drive and embodied that culture have gone onto other things be it because truly innovative projects/products are nixed because FCF etc etc.

With inflation I’m making less than when I started at MDT six years ago. I’ve also never gotten a full MIP because because of lackluster performance either in my business or the enterprise. All of that for getting an exceeds rating on every single one of my reviews. What’s the motivation to try? I don’t see it getting better any time soon.

Don’t underestimate the greed and this leadership trying to save their as--s by letting others suffer for their gain. This new leadership has GE vibes all over it. There is no culture, they pretend there is a culture but it’s just lip stick on a pig. This company should be admired anymore, Geoff is a joke of a leader who is too chicken sh-t to lead a company.

I wonder if senior leadership understands how bad it has sucked to be a Medtronic employee recently? Hiring and travel freezes starting literally at midyear? What a joke, that's not a solution. Pull the bandaid off if you have to ( hc cuts), but make the decision and plow forward. How does spreading out layoffs over 60 days show that we are moving with speed and decisiveness? I really wanted to work here and have a better purpose than produce widgets at another place, but I think about leaving every single day. EVERY SINGLE DAY. Can't make up my mind, as I keep hoping that we are about to turn the corner. Backorders say otherwise.
