Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

When do you predict the ISP will happen?

Do you think they will happen Friday afternoon? Monday morning or sometime next week? Or could this take a long time...?

“Can”
“Could”
A mere summary of benefits on a website does not set legal precedent. My point: getting fired for “poor performance” does not necessarily mean you are not eligible for unemployment benefits. People should apply anyways.

The Texas website has the complete unemployment requirements for the state.

No extra worker protections or stipulations.

And it's clear that getting fired for poor performance can make you ineligible.

You assume there are laws requiring "fairness in firing".

See if you can find a link to a web page with that kind of law for a state with a GM innovation center.

Yes, it depends on state, but even so there are likely some legal stipulations there; i.e. GM must have provided a documented way of improving for the employee for some time before termination.
If you have been getting fine reviews and suddenly you are canned for “poor performance,” I doubt that is going to prevent someone from collecting.

In either case, I would recommend people to try anyways. Don’t just assume you won’t get it.

Examples of misconduct that could make you ineligible include... failure to perform your work adequately if you are capable of doing so.

Your state may be different.

I’m pretty sure just “poor performance” isn’t enough to get GM off the hook when it comes to someone collecting unemployment.

Did they reach their target for VSP? Any news? Are we safe now?

Companies don't care how layoffs "look", especially these days. Every big company is laying off: Google, Amazon, Meta, etc.

But I agree they'll get rid of people after every performance review. The advantage of getting rid of people for poor performance is they're being fired for cause, so the company doesn't have to give them any severance and they can't collect Unemployment, which would raise the company's insurance premiums they pay the state if a lot of people collect.

Now remember they're going to do 4 performance reviews a year.

Every few months you have to worry.

I think the old dog is learning new tricks. GM execs know how bad layoffs look and I think they already had a plan when they said no layoffs. With the new "performance" based firing strategy they can get rid smaller batches at whatever pace the want to have reviews...they don't even need layoffs anymore. No WARN notice, much less bad press, no time for employees to feel safe because now you're next review is right around the corner. Most of all, no ISP.

Welcome to the new new GM.

I would imagine we'll all have to RTO if /when they plan an ISP. Highly doubt they'll do it while WFH.

April 5th or 6th.

At the EARLIEST it'll be April 3rd. The VSPs aren't finalized until March 31st, and April 3rd is the first workday after then.

Why not stay and get paid for 3 months after you quit?

You can sleep at your desk.

What are they going to do, fire you?

Why would someone quit (take the VSP) on March 24 then stay until the last day of June?

That doesn't make sense for the employee or the company.

Why would you think that ISP has to wait until after VSP actually leaves? After tomorrow, they know how many are taking the VSP and what those costs will look like going forward. Why would they sit around and wait until everyone's gone? Doesn't make any sense

I am VSP last day in June I would not expect ISP until after VSP gone

Why would they need to keep VSP people around so long after they basically quit?

And why does the ISP have to wait to start until every VSP person has had their last day?

Seems like you can get everything done a few days after March 24.

Sounds like shutdown will last quite a bit longer this year for thousands of people.

The ISP should occur in May/June, based on the 2019 layoff timing (early Feb 2019). VSP'ers were told at the time they'd be gone by Jan 31st, and this time it's June 31st. But this time HR is better prepared and can make ISP layoffs sooner than in 2019.

@1jqc+1lL0ttQg so you are the smartest one but still hovering over this site. Good luck. Don't get culled.

Even if no one really knows anything, it makes sense to get the VSP and ISP done fast.

Why have people hanging around for weeks bringing down morale and not doing any work anyway?

Just pull off the bandaid.

Even after all this VSP and ISP is done, just remember the 4 performance reviews every year.

People will be leaving branded as poor performers every few months

How do you know that Wednesday is the day?

This Friday is the deadline to take the VSP.

They'll be told they're going on Wednesday.

The people leaving in the ISP will get their shoulder taps on Wednesday also.

Everyone leaving will go on the same day so HR can just set up an assembly line to process people.

The VSP people will just walk away with more money in their pockets.
