Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Gaining visibility

I have convinced myself more than once that it is futile to work hard if your efforts are not noticed by anyone. It's the hardest part of the job for me - how to make sure that your hard work is visibly noticeable to those who make decisions around here? Perhaps someone has some good advice.

It's sad that visibility is based on who you boast your achievements to. And as R&D, we get the job done and the satisfaction is in knowing that we solved a major challenge or developed a new to world technology. The dark side of the mirror comes when we see others take recognition for our work and leaving the real contributors/inventors out. This will demotivate any scientist/engineer instantly. I'm glad my immediate management structure does not take credit for our team's work, but I am aware of many other groups where it happens on a daily basis. So sad and toxic. Soon it will only be management who will be admitted into Carlton Society.

Why don't you seek guidance from the corporate scientist, JS, on gaining visibility? She is more visible than many of the 3M bigwigs on LinkedIn.

I worked really hard in the lab, and spent many hours traveling to plants for scale up.
I got no recognition.

One day, I married my supervisor who was in a succession plan.
As she rose to the top, I was promoted.

My advice? Marry someone on a succession plan!

Learn to play golf and ice fish and you’ll be noticed at 3M.

I used to berate my colleagues that said they just get out of the way and hide for days on end, now I have become a hide and seek champion and my days are grand again, I go into work everyday just to play this game, guess who is winning.

Or you could just hide and keep the paycheck coming!

I did, and never looked back.

It's even worse when your hard work is stolen by management. Ethical company.

If you want visibility, join management ranks. Technical folks have zero value, visibility and career prospects in 3M these days.

Are you surprised why they are leaving in droves ?

Work for yourself and do not rely on any corporation.

I understand your frustrations my friend, you are definetly not the only employee on here to feel this, we can all give our best and then some, but as the saying goes, "if your face doesn't fit ".Just do your contracted hours, no more, and if you are still unhappy then there might be better options outside of this place, if you want to fight it, talk to your manager and the first question should be, "why have I not been promoted", an honest answer your manager should give you, but at the minute all I ever hear about is manager's out for themselves , no interest in seeing the peasants progress, good luck anyway with whatever you choose

For your own peace of mind, keep your best foot forward, give 100%. It is challenging to do right now, but it will serve you well. People notice, one never knows how decisions made today will impact them in the future.
