Thread regarding 3M layoffs

I left last year

I've still been following what's been happening at 3M. I have to admit, I feel bad for the employees, but I'd lie if I said I didn't enjoy watching this place fall apart and the leadership panic as they continue to sink this ship with their id--tic decisions. I hope they face consequences for everything they've done to this place soon.

3M is not a psychologically safe place to work. I have seen seen managers yell at employees who disagree with them. They berate employees for no reason. The level of narcissism among the senior leaders it is impossible for many to admit they are wrong or refuse to listen to advice or opinions from direct reports with years of experience. I am sure if a consultant gave the same advice they would accept it! In 15 years I have seen too many great managers leave (mostly those from other companies with much experience) because the bad managers (mostly long term 3Mers) feel threatened by them and make it a miserable place to work.

I gave notice this year and left for a company that is respectable and focused on true growth investment and their employees.

I feel like I’ve regained my life back and am reinvigorated. Coming from other good companies I thought I had joined a world-class company that likely offered great employee development and autonomy. How wrong I was. The thing is when you’re an external hire there’s a strong sense of what works and what doesn’t. It was so easy to walk away despite the pay because in the end it was clear to me that there are VERY FEW genuine senior leaders. I can’t work for and with leadership I don’t believe in.

For all the pretty PowerPoints and talking points provided at town halls regarding “employee engagement, psychological safety, and care” actions speak louder than words and I never really saw any of this in practice.

I have a lot of respect for my former peers and I do hope that someday 3M will be the company everyone knows that it can be.

I feel for all the longtime 3Mers who don’t know anything different. Many of my former colleagues lamented that they wish they “could be brave enough” to leave too but they are either to financially invested, dependent on medical benefits, or are hoping things will change after the spin-off.

I too left for better pay, better hours, and to work for a company I believe in. It used to be the same for 3M, unfortunately not anymore.

I still have some years left until retirement, but despite giving my best effort, I have been repeatedly overlooked for promotions by self-absorbed senior managers. Despite my attempts to gain visibility among higher-ups, they often show favoritism towards their preferred individuals, and some of their decisions seem inexplicable. At this point, I find myself taking pleasure in witnessing the chaos that ensues due to their poor leadership. I just wish it would all come to an end, so that I can receive a severance package and perhaps explore other career options, such as joining GE.

I also left recently and feel rescued. I’m a former long time 3Mer and as a shareholder I am rooting for a turnaround, but frankly I don’t see it. Need a hard reboot on the whole organization. Not gonna happen until well after executive leadership is turned over…..hope the runway is long enough to get there.

Same here. Also left last year. Would’ve liked to stay, but the Titanic is sinking and a lifeboat arrived at the right time. The company is done for.
