Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Layoff rumors or just complaining

I've been coming to this site for a few years and started when it was a good place to go for rumors/news about possible upcoming layoffs....It seems like it has become the same as any other social media site where people just come to complain.

I'm not saying it's perfect here, but what are you comparing it to? I see the same thing at most large companies.

The company and its spin off want more savings from layoffs. Watch more cattle forced out of feeding grounds.

I love the people at AIG, but I don't like the fact that they invest nothing in your training or personal development. But every company exploit their employees, Ii don't see any difference with others, aside that in AIG they don't even pretend to care about you. And yet the freedom I have here makes everything lighter. If the executive or your department is a nice person and your direct boss is too, your life is so more easy (doesn't mean that you will not be fired eventually because Someone in India can do your job at a 1/5 of the cost)

The reason you don’t see that many rumors about layoffs is because the answer is always “yes”. What else would there be to say if people didn’t sound off on the other issues?

I love the laser focus on cost cutting. Like when you hire a 70 year old CEO to get rid of legacy employees and then pay a hundred million for his prior company only to run it off the next year. The current CEO will outsource thousands of employees to Accenture, but give himself a fifty million dollar bonus. AIG even paid seven and a half million to the recent exec who got fired.

Cost cutting only applies at the field level and it only benefits executives and stakeholders. Good thing we have cool offices with no employees to use them.

Nice try HR. If everything was fine with the company, people wouldn't be coming here to look for info about layoffs and a place to vent. So how about you do same real work and make some actual improvements instead of blaming your own employees for being unsatisfied with your own mistakes?

I agree, you what I love most. Working for years and never getting promoted. Or, 2% cost of living increases when inflation is 9%. I tell my kids to be like PZ and sc--w the little person so you can prosper. It is a great message.

You know what else is super great? Yeah, it's when my colleagues leave and never get replaced. Guess what, I get their work. It is amazing. I love it. It really makes me feel special.

But here is the best thing, you never know when your business unit will be sold or outsourced so you never feel completely comfortable. It really keeps you on your toes.

My colleagues are super nice and agree with everything I say because they are losers too. AIG is awesome. Love you PZ!
All and all,

I agree with OP. AIG is more than fine if you view it as just a job. Collect a paycheck for a couple years, gain transferable experience to boost your resume, then leave/upgrade for more money in the future.

I guess if you’re trying to make the place a decades-long career with endless internal growth opportunities, it might be less than ideal.

Personally, as a resume booster, I think the place is great. Good salary, cool office location and amenities, colleagues are nice, good hours etc.
