Glad to have WYW on a day like today

Most be some 20 inches on the ground in the easy metro. Latest endless storm of 15 inches at MSP was starting to remind me of the 1991 Halloween blizzard. Anyone remember finding out people got the next day off with pay? That was in the good old days of Desi.

The Price is Right is a metaphor for pretend working from home. You see, not in the too distant past, the only time you could watch TPIR was typically when home sick.

Now WFHers can watch TPIR everyday, walk their dog and take a nap on the couch. Just keep sending out emails in late evening. Most of us caught on to the charade but since leadership also does it, thet ain't gonna say $hit about it.

WYW ers better get used to actually getting off their @$$ and getting back to work. Or find somewhere else that accepts a 40% effort. WYW life hack - keep sending emails late into evening hours. Right now leadership is d-mb to figure it out, or are complicit in the game themselves.

If disney has changed its tune and it now forcing people to be back 4 days a week to "foster a collaborative environment," then it's just a short matter of time that WYW is kicked to the curb.

Tireman made it crystal clear during a recent call with a lot of empty chairs around him that this is NOT 3M culture.

Better catch the last few episodes of the price is right and those long afternoon naps while you can.

Tireman is just a bean counter who came from a tire shop and before that Starbucks. He is frigging clueless about chemical manufacturing. Cut more heads, demand more production than ever, and sooner or later either the reliability goes down or safety incidents rise or sometimes both.

He doesn't care because he's not the customer service rep who has to call a customer last minute and tell them that the delivery will be delayed AGAIN.

Also, I can tell you it is tragic telling someone's family about a serious injury or workplace death. Fortunately, I personally never had to do that as the injuries we had were not quite as serious, but I do know leaders who were in the waiting room at a hospital while the family of an employee comes in who is in critical condition after a workplace accident. It is devastating and even worse than the sick feeling many of us got when we had to tell an employee they were being let go.

Tireman has NONE of these serious issues to deal with. He just gets to go around and tell people to cut and, oh yeah, work safely with more production and fewer people. That guy is clueless.

I think Gibbons looks at overhead as an even bigger cost than the production folks cost. All salaried people (including plant engineers) are in one bucket and the hourly folks are in another. For a lot of products the portion of the cost that is our hourly folks is EXTREMELY low (50% in many cases). On a recent plant visit a plant manager was commenting how we cannot affect fixed cost (largely paying for overhead and equipment depreciation) and it makes up such a large portion of the cost.Gibbons shot back “your only true fixed cost is depreciation” (implying we can reduce fixed by paying people off).

Will be an interesting 2023.

While WFH (includes WYW an remote), between errands, walking the dog, and fine tuning your bid on the Final Showcase, draft a very thoughtful email or put together a beautiful 4-Blocker Power. For the overly guilt ridden, make it a 6 blocker. The more buzzwords the better - opportunity, challenge, top of mind, and be sure to "action the failure mode."

Save as draft. Then, between the hours of 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm, start a NEW email which creates a new timestamp. This is key. Then, copy and paste your work you did while multitasking watching the Price is Right. Send between the hours of 7:30 pm - and 11:00 pm. I've found those hours to be the sweet spot, but feel free to experiment on your own. The fall for it every time.....LOL.

If you're working 70 plus hours a week for a 40 hr paycheck, then you need to take up some hobbies, go for a workout at lunch, watch the price is right religiously, and quit living for a working.

You can also get free help at EAP to manage this anxiety. Please don't let the place eat you alive.

Working from home for 3 years I realized I have no work boundaries- I work 12+ hours per day 6 days away as I’m so afraid I’m not doing enough. I know some people take advantage, but with the downsizing we have all become accustomed too, I think most people are working many more hours than if there was commute to work and disruptions that an office brings.

When battling a serious health issue, would you want your team of doctors discussing your plan over a Teams meeting, eating a samwhich, distracted by background such as dogs barking, kids crying, and "come on down, your the next contestant on the Price is Right" from the TV? Probably not. Get back to work.

Sadly for the production people, you are considered a COST and not an asset. Before I "retired" with a severance package in 2021, I wondered how the plants could even stay in operation when the budgets, especially maintenance, have been getting cut year after year. Duct tape, rubber bands, tie wraps, gorilla glue, and various "repair" kits only go so far. The things I saw being done to stave off shutting down because we didn't have the maintenance budget to pay for real fixes was ridiculous. You can be certain the big boss at the plant was going to get put on a PIP if she/he heaven forbid went over budget.

This company has gone downhill so far so fast thus century. The 1980s and 90s 3M never Di-kered over spending the money to fix equipment and piping. It was safety first to protect our people.

Why they ever changed to this, why?

Trust me it’s not jealousy. I’m proud to be at the plant earning the respect of operators and maintenance. The ones who actually make the company money. When the layoffs happen the plants will be a little less likely to see them than a manager WTW with “0” direct reports. The folks in the Ivory tower are disconnected from reality.

I'm a retired former plant engineer. I think 3M need to make up for the sacrifice of being at the plant by giving a compensation adder, say 5 to 10 percent extra in the paycheck. That makes up for lost time driving to and from work and having to pay for child care, etc. Otherwise, production engineers will just move from garbage grove to 3M Center and go WYW and watch Drew Carey and price is right instead of busting their butts helping resolve production issues.

Nope all wrong. WYW has ruined the company. I’m a plant engineer who can’t and won’t WFH. People who worked at home last 3 years are stealing. Many of them posting cat and dog pictures on Yammer. Get back to work your usefulness is waning.
