Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Accepted a worse offer or got a much better one?

I'm glad when I hear from others that they got a much better job after VMW, however, I've been looking for a better option for months and I can't get anything better.
That's why I'm a little disappointed and depressed, and I already think that I'll have to accept a worse opportunity if I don't want to put myself in a situation where I'm left without any job at all.

Opposite for me. I moved around VMW quite a bit over my tenure and got a significant pay raise each time.

VMW pays well. Better than some, worse than others.

For those starting their career the popular theory is that you should switch jobs every two years and get 30% increase each time. In reality, many moves will be lateral or negative compensation. My last two jobs were taking lower pay, but getting into larger pay bands. So within two years it made up for it. One was just taking flat out less money for better work environment.

If you're focusing only on something "better", then the current job isn't that bad enough to leave. Because at some point anything is better than a horrible job.

There are a lot of companies which pay better than VMware and a lot of companies which pay less. In general I think VMware offers a very good compensation package.

Usually small/medium US product/data/cloud companies like: Datadog, Databrick, MongoDB, Confluent and a lot of companies like this should all pay better for almost every roles/areas.
This companies however are quite risky and a big part of the good compensation is in stocks.

FAANG and related type companies usually pays more at the same level/role, but this is not a good time for them probably to join.

Big famous US companies like Salesforce, Adobe, SAS, Oracle, Teradata, and thousands like these as well as banks/financial sector companies may pay more or less the same depending on role/area.

VMware is probably paying better than very old/declining IT companies like: IBM, HP probably Intel ecc... and a lot of telco companies (international and locals).

Of course VMware pays better than almost any system integrator companies (especially in Europe) and almost any non US based company in Europe/Asia.

Yea we had CAs in EMEA PSO on 85k mentoring Dell Architects doing 150k ..... Who were on the bench most of the time.

Absolutely nuts.

Who really cares about the rank and file employees being overpaid vs the c-suite and VPs who are vastly overpaid to the point of immortality.

VMware pays based on your ability to negotiate when you first start. Of course, this is typically based on skill and experience and ability to demonstrate those during the interview process. The pay scales are very wide. For example, using PSO as that seems to be the theme in this thread, it is perfectly possible to have two P5 consultants with the same job title, doing the same job on vastly different compensation, say 65 Euro verses 110 Euro. This is not the public sector we're talking about.... you are not automatically entitled to earn the same as the rest of your team, just because you think you deserve it.

Another factor in PSO is the cohort that came from Dell, which in general were far better paid than people with more experience already in VMW PSO. There existing Dell T&C came with them as is, so that created a significant challenge.

I do not think VMware staff are overpaid.
Glassdoor shows roles are similar to other sw companies.

Do some pay less, absolutely. Do some pay more, absolutely.

I think the industry needs more transparency around pay

Welcome to reality. And I think a lot of people will come to the realisation how good VMware pays. I know of guys that are on six figures in PSO EMEA (they claim anyway). When you look on LinkedIn the same job maybe pays 3/4 of that at a push.

I bet that’s likely why so many people moan and are afraid of the acquisition. A lot of people with common sense know they are on good packages that are just not sustainable.

The other issue I saw is the fact that in a team of 30+ , a LOT were benched 50% of the time. Common sense says that you could easily get away with 30-50% of the staff to do the same work.

Twitter is the best example how meat cutting made almost no difference.

I viewed “worse” and “better” the same as total comp (TC) or a bunch rolled into one. Prioritizing a better boss, better work, better c-suite, better culture, and better vision. Then considering comp based on need. Didn’t matter if it was more or less. My experience at vmw was awful. Happy today.

Overpays compared to hardware companies maybe. VMW barely pays within 20-30% of top tier software companies though. SWEs here are underpaid. Sales though, sales is making a lot more than is appropriate for this tier of company.

Depends on how you were brought in. I got brought in as an associate and even though I am now at the same "level" as my peers I am still vastly underpaid for those with the same title who started after me.

Reality is about to descend upon a LOT of VMware associates. They absolutely don't have a clue as to how overpaid and pampered they are.
