A lot of companies grandfathered existing employees in their defined benefit pension programs when they forced new hires to go into defined contribution "pensions" (actually just enhanced 401k programs with no pension period). 3M did this in march 2008.
Now a lot of companies have stopped new contributions into pensions for grandfathered employees..they keep what they've earned but going forward just get enhanced 401k.
If you think you can outperform professional pension managers, good luck. This is usually a loss for those forced to move mid career to these new programs.
