What is Intel's Core Competency?

I'm hard pressed to come up one that is persistent and relevant.

  1. Innovation on the full custom CISC, high power x86 IP domain? (weak persistent and becoming irrelevant -- ARM is disrupting for all directions ).
  1. Leadership process development? ( lost position, spotty execution and less relevant when many core ARM can beat highly complex CISC)
  1. Higher quality designs? Manufacturing? ( Not really).
  1. Low cost manufacturer (No).
  1. Best talent? (No).
  1. Best Bloviators? (Yes, but irrelevant).
  1. Best DEI program? ( huge investment here, but arguably detracting from innovation and success. Tribalism, lack of meritocracy are negative side effects nobody acknowledges).
  1. Ability to identify new silicon based businesses, persist and win share e.g. Graphics. (No, in fact this has resulted in $Bs in losses. )

I would day AMD is there equal to superior execution. When you factor their scale and headcount it really highlights how inefficient and poor executing Intel is. Of course x86 os trapped by TMG /LTD failure to deliver. That can’t be discounted in product team failure.

Under Bill and Sohail Intel lost a half decade leadership. The seeds of failure were set based on a culture of promoting the wrong people that culminated in those 10nm. Current leadership and culture both in TMG and LTD incapable of the pivot. It will take a decade to recover but sadly they don’t have a decade. Pat and the BoD have no background or skill to understand the real issues and challenges beyond the ppt fools they are fed on OKRs and such.

@1suu+1kqQHYMf Apple will soon discard Intel top to bottom. Or because they have no competition. Intel always gives fruit company special treatment.

I would agree in HPC they can still design a competitive part. Notice I said competitive, Apple, Nvidia, AMD are equal and unlike 20 years ago they are as big to bigger so they can put spend Intel on design and NONE worry about the fab process side.

Intel is stretched way to thin trying to Battle AMD, Nvidia, and the cloud companies Google, Microsoft, Amazon in the design space and also TSMC and Samsung on the fab site.

This is Germany trying to fight on three fronts! If they don’t attack Africa and Russia the world would be different. If Paul had said yes to the Fruit company or BK and Bill really put their hearts into Foundry 15 years ago, everything could be different. But Germany decided three fronts and Intel is doing similar, total insanity and we know Pat’s condition to become CEO was all in and no questions, burn the boats strategy that will destroy what is left of the company

Points 3-8 are valid. Your first two points are applicable to mobile. For data centers and even desktop, no. Heck Apple is still on Intel for their high end desktop.

And why IDM + IFS is doomed for a failure. Spread to thing and spending huge sums of money because of ego and arrogance of leadership lost.

Intel could possibly be a competitive HPC, graphics forget it they have failed again and again there.

Silicon and manufacturing forget it, a war lost ten years ago and fully exposed with 10nm and multiple failed attempts at Foundry
