Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I'm living to work, at this point

You know that old saying: work to live, don't live to work? Well, I'm sadly on the second end of it right now. I had to work the whole weekend, Christmas included, to stay on top of things. We lost half of our team, but expectations are still the same regarding projects and deadlines. I'm about ready to break. I know many of you will say ignore anything that's not my job, but I can't afford to lose my job right now for medical reasons. With all the tech layoffs, I know finding a new job is nearly impossible. It's just a screwed up situation all around.

FFS, don't do this! Now someone in management will be justifying their decision to cut your team. Letting it all crash and burn, whilst pointing to a 48hr week ("I'm doing 120%, and I can't sustain it!"), is the only way out.

You can think about “living within your means” while you are suffering two years of subsistence. Part of budgeting is putting away a buffer. As the previous comment said, welcome to adulthood

If you need to live a "subsistence lifestyle" to put away 1 yr of living expenses in savings, then so be it. It's what grown ups do. Nobody said adulting would be easy...

Saving up one year of income is kinda silly advice to give this person. Even if they out away half of what they made each month it would take them two years.

Realistically, it takes 4-6 years to save that much money without enduring subsistence level lifestyle.

Start saving money like your life depends on it. You should always have at least 1 yr of living expenses banked, particularly if you are a toxic white male. Get some FU money banked and you will be much happier.
