Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

The most important thing here is to pretend

It makes me sick, but I am aware that nothing will change for a long time because it has become a part of the culture here. Why are pretenders so valued at GM?
Everyone knows that these people do almost nothing, but somehow they manage to build a career here thanks to their good acting, not their work.

Not the only one who noticed that politics is everything in this company and good work is impossible to get done?

Working at General Motors is a lot like government work. Similar culture and similar results.

I am almost to the point where I take another job for less money cause it's so boring and political.

"Why would you put up with that?"

  1. Manager resisting you taking a position in another group.
  1. Manager saying they would help you not realizing they are saying what they have to change your mind and everything they do will be used against you.
  1. It's hard to give up the belief that hard work and doing what's right means more than politics and trash-talk.
  1. Not wanting to give-in to the fact that professional, trained, educated people who should be bound by ethics could be so dishonest and destructive to their coworkers.
  1. You can like the work you do despite your coworkers behavior.

STEP 4: Your coworkers spread insane rumors about you to justify taking away your responsibilities, belittling your work, and engaging in general emotional abuse so the years you spent doing steps 1 - 3 are meaningless.

You are wrong pal.

STEP 1: Work hard and diligently but keep a healthy work life balance.

STEP 2: Make sure your work gets visibility especially management.

STEP 3: Stop complaining and look for growth in skills.

Wrong. Pretending will get you nowhere.
The most important things "here" are connections and privilege.

Follow the flow chart:

  • Are you connected?---

Yes? Pick up your laptop and relish your assignment-free existence. Wait quietly for your turn to be promoted. Attendance is optional. You can leave at lunch.

No? Pick up your laptop and see your manager for your assignments. You will be doing the work of three people for 10 hours a day. You are classified internally as a permanent individual contributor. Stay in your lane and avoid connected people or face repercussions during reviews.
