Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Is 3M being run by Christmas vacation boss?

Just watched national lampoon Christmas vacation for the 100th time or so and couldn't help but notice the comparison of current 3M management with Clark Griswolds boss Frank Shirley.

Shirley acts like he is why the company is so successful. Cuts Christmas bonuses to give out jelly of the month instead. All in the name of greed.

Meanwhile, in the real world, people are getting 2 percent raises and 250 everyday win points for Christmas, only to be let go on Dec 31. Communities are dealing with forever chemicals in drinking water and told not to worry. Veterans lose hearing from defective ear plugs (aearo even admitted the plugs didn't work in an internal memo from 1999) only to be told they didn't properly the ear plugs.

At least Shirley came around at the end after seeing the impact his greed had on the "little people" like Clark. Will Mike and Monish have a similar Christmas change of heart?

Severance includes the AIP Target at 100% for the employee — likely a better deal than hedging against company performance.

I’ve not heard of any planned Dec 31st separations, but that would be BRUTAL as getting AIP/SIP requires employment through Jan 1. I suppose for many a severance would be better than AIP, but the timing would still be awful.

Some 3M sites like cottage grove have a union for certain workers, but 3M plays hard ball on negotiations and makes the other side it will move more jobs to China or perhaps a non union site in the south.

This corporation is just like the original poster said. Like Mr. Shirley and greed, but at least he had a heart in the end. Not sure with the M and M boys.

Have 3M employees considered a union?

Here is the truth. 3M wants to pay you the least and get the most out of you. Putting energy into caring or demonstrating value to employees has an opportunity cost. Employees want the highest pay, etc. This is the classic zero sum game. This is the relationship that is entered. It is obvious the balance of this relationship has shifted dramatically, to the detriment of the employee. Choices are to suffer through it, rebalance the equation so that the relationship is worth it, or exit. It sad that it has come to this. Only you can decide what is best for you. Good luck to all.
