Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

What the company wants and what it has been doing is very contradictory

Firstly, Company wants high performance talents, but it doesnt want to pay to that standard, that is the main reason why many department could not recruit experineced hires. Many years ago, good people queue to join EM they will join even without a payraise, now they will not join unless there is a huge payraise because they know they will suffer here, if suffering without good compensation, what for? - this is also applicable to existing employees.
Secondly, company wants to "streamline" (aka downsize) reources especially in expensive places like US Singapore, however they are still hiring in these places! Of course I know it is because the attrition rate was beyond expectation, but WTF, can you let us know what your EXPECTED ATTRITION RATE? That means the company wants to get people out with so called natural attrition tactics. For those who are joining now, mass layoff will wait for you very soon when oil price plunges, and you will find you get nothing but get fxxked by the company with "natural attrition"!

Thirdly, company wants good experinced people but they donnt want to spend effort to keep the existing good experienced employees. Watching 10+ years experienced people leaving is like watching black holes being created in that position, the black holes then absorb energy and morale and faith of people who stay nearby. EM management think anyone can take the job but that is not true, the experiences in those people will only be reflected when there is a big incident, where EM believes in its "perfect documentation and systems which enables anyone to pickup jobs in a day" - lets pray the big incident is not happening to you or me.

Enough said, I personally do not think they company can go anywhere unless they allow experienced outside management level people to join the ELT CLT CRLT and make decisions. People who are born with the systen have huge blind spots which they are unable to discover and even if they discover they choose to ignore because that was the system from which they were born.

Sorry to break the news, “world class talent” is expensive and is not a company goal no matter what they. The goal is to be “good enough” and the path to that goal is outsourcing as much work as possible to low cost locations such as India.

I assume the person who wrote this views themselves as being world-class in whatever it is they do.

Uncomfortable truth: if you’re working for Exxon or anything like it, you are most likely not world-class in whatever it is they pay you to do. If you were you’d be doing it somewhere else for better pay and working conditions.

Managers are just now starting to realize this won’t happen. I think the message has gotten to low to mid CL30s, but it has a long way to go to get to Darren…. And he will likely reject the reality.

Darren will get a band aide until his tenure as CEO is done. If he is lucky, nothing really bad will happen. Then the poor guy or gal coming after him will have a mess to clean-up. I suspect they will be rehiring some of the same talent at Tier 1+ salaries. At best, it is a wash if they can skimp-by with fewer Tier 2 headcount for 5 years. If something bad does happen, then Darren is alleviated from responsibility via a Catch 22. No way you could show the outcome would have been different absent his efficiencies.

I agree with theses points.

EM believes in its perfect documentation systems which enables anyone to pickup jobs in a day….but that is not true. You cannot replace decades of experience easily.

People who are born in the system have huge blind spots that they refuse to see.

To sum it up:

  1. We are cogs in the wheel. Replaceable with cheaper parts.
  2. This a pyramid scheme and not a meritocracy. The system favors inbreeding.
