Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Baton Rouge Culture

Exxon is offering me a job at Baton Rouge Chemical Plant. The pay is good, benefits look pretty decent as well but before i quit my current job i wanted to ask what is the culture like in the Chemical Plant.

BRCP attitude on the units is good. Some SLS and above follow old school blame game and step on people to move upwards.

The DH was transferred to BRPO. Hopefully he stays there. Only time will tell how the new DH works out. Bright side is she doesn’t talk in circles or philosophizes all day

Everything said about Baton Rouge is the same at Beaumont. Beaumont is probably worse since most of the leadership here came over from Baton Rouge. The company is hiring for the short term. They are just trying to plug holes in the current work force. You will work long hours and have no life for 1-2 years until you get ranked and realize you made a mistake.

All you have to do is search prior posts. There are plenty that mention Baton Rouge in the title.

Engineering leads the way in toxicity, technical is not very far behind especially with new management. They are trying to show they care but their actions are contrary to care. Gas lighting, perception based opinions over performance and much more.

The previous engineering sls went to be a BTL right? Are the new ones any good?

Great post! Our drawings are so messed up it takes more time to figure out what you’re working on than it does to troubleshoot. Former engineering sls canned our drawing folks and it’s run overseas now by folks that have never even been to the site so you can imagine how horrible the drawings are. I’m sure she received a big fat raise but transferred before the results of her horrible decisions were realized. It will take xom hundreds of thousands of dollars to manually go correct the drawings if they ever decide to try and fix them. Your choice but I will never come back once I leave.

I challenge you to find a more toxic work environment. The pay isn’t worth the stress and good leaders are hard to find much less good supervisors. The forced ranking pits everyone against everyone. The really bad supervisors are essentially the kiss of death. As others have mentioned, the worst department is the machinery special purpose group followed by engineering group. Self serving group leads in engineering stealing employees work for their own. Constant lies and if you challenge them or ask questions they will tank you in the ranking preload. It’s horrible and I’m actively looking for a job so I can escape this dumpster fire. The prior sls and dh destroyed the group. So many good employees left along with older engineers that decided to leave early because of the toxic sls. Do yourself a favor and don’t even consider this place.

On top of the other feedback in the thread, Baton Rouge is a dump of a town. If you have kids make sure and do some research on the schools.

The smaller sites like BRPO tend to be a bit better culturally, the complex is awful

Current employee here. I wouldn't accept it. Exxon is a company in transition. To make the transition the management committee laid off, fired, or forced out thousands of loyal, lifelong employees that had given their lives for the corporation. Darren, TG, Neil and Jack did not hesitate for a minute to do this. As a result the company has lost like 30% of the employees. Right now there is nothing in the corporation that works. Absolutely nothing. There is no training, IT is dead and managed from India, procurement, HR, law all of these department have almost no employees left so anything you need from them takes months. Other folks can give you an idea about the specifics of BR. But, I suspect it is the same as in the rest of the corporation. So, if I were you I would not come. Look elsewhere. But, it is your decision. Good luck.

Dont go to work for XOM, you will be PIPed. Before you are hired, They will tell you now you dont need to worry about being PIPed because you are a great candidate, and you will buy it. After you get hired there is no protection from a PIP even if you are a top class performer.

Run away like your hair is on fire. Especially if you are in machinery or engineering.
